Escaflowne DVD question

Vampire Ninja
So i bought the Escaflowne boxset today for £18. Maybe not the cheapest price but was pretty good IMO. Ive heard that the picture quality is pretty bad.

Is this true and how bad? Is it still watchable?

It's not bad, just not as good as it should be. The masters used for all the uk releases of Escaflowne have inferrer visuals to it's US counter parts.

So I bought the Escaflowne boxset two months ago for £18. Finally got round to finishing it today, and found the subtitles cut off halfway through the last episode D:
Fortunately the dub seems accurate enough comparing it word-for-word with the Japanese, at least for those final five minutes.
But is this something that happens on all copies? Or is it just my copy that's messed up and there are replacements available?

By the way, the video looks fine to me, though VHS-ish and PAL-converted.

The subs are missing on all the UK discs. It's why I bought Region 1.

Well that's just dumb then. This is what, its third release... and going by Amazon, eight years after the first one. Surprised they haven't fixed it by now, unless I guess possibly it needs to be re-BBFC'd if they change the subtitles...
