I'm proberly gonna word this wrong so here goes.

Are there any region 1 dvd's that are actually region free that aren't available in the UK.

E.g. Dragonball Z series collections say they are region 1 and are advertised as that, but they are actually region free.

That explanation was more long winded then it needed to be and proberly wasn't explained as well as it should be but any answers would be greatful.

Actually DBZ isn't region free as such, its just Region 1, 2 and 4.

Rather than trying to find region free DVDs (as that will lead you to pirate versions) either buy a multi-region DVD player (or mod a DVD player with a code you can find online) or download VLC which will enable to play any region DVD on your PC.

You can look for old US Manga Corps DVDs, stuff like Now And Then, Here And There is not only region "All" (and legal) but also Awesome.

For some reason my ADV Eva boxset ( the original release) was region free. Beyond that I have a region free program on my PC so it doesn't bother me.

The DVD release of the first Gunbuster series from Kiseki was region 0 but given the poor sound and video quality, it might as well be a bootleg! :p

Looking at the neat job Beez made of the GB2 DVD though, I'd like to see them do the same for the first one. *nudge, nudge, hint, hint etc.*

You see, The problem I have with the whole "Playing on the computer, with VLC" is that it doesn't work for me, I think its because its a [Sony] BD-Drive, which does have its benefits, yes, but.. I can't play Region 1 DVDs which is a major fail to be honest.

Whatever. ;/ I usually buy DVDs so I can watch them on the TV.

But there are some companies who don't bother putting a region code on, but still label a disc as a certain region.

The only title I've checked myself is Najica, but I'm certain it's the case for many other titles, though it depends on what companie releases the title.

Yeah, I agree.

I've seen some good quality all-region anime DVDs before. ^^ Like my friend's boxset of Fruits Basket and Yami no Matsuei. They have subs in English and Chinese, and usually a dub track. :D
But, like all illegal DVDs, there are gonna be some that are bad, like my friend's boxset of Ouran High-School Host Club, which had subs, yeah, but all the names were Chinese! Haruhi was called Piyin, Tamaki was called something like Dao Yan... Very strange, but in the big world of bootlegs, you don't really know whatcha got until you buy it. .-. And usually you can't get your money back (eBay people who sell illegal stuff and then run).

So, while there are some good pirated Region 0 anime DVDs, there are bad ones too.

Btw, I'm not really condoning the use of bootleg anime DVDs, but since there's no such thing as a legal Region 0 DVD, if you're desperate enough, that may be the way to go.

There are legit US R0 DVDs (see my earlier post in this thread for an example) - a lot of non-movie DVDs like music video collections are also regionless; it's just too much hassle. A lot of current Blu-ray discs are also regionless. It's a way early companies try to get support for a platform before going all out with restrictions and global licensing. R0 doesn't necessarily mean bootleg. But bootleg always means ripping off the talented people who made the anime :)

If you're that desperate just buy a R1 and strip the region coding out yourself on a computer and play the image. An all region player is definitely the way to go though if you can get hold of one. It's just so useful!

Ironically I think Yami No Matsuei may be one of the US releases which is Region:All legitimately too. I can check when I get home.

Ah, well, the one I've got (it's a friend's) is region free and it has subs in Chinese and English. ^^

Mm that one's definitely a bootleg. But in future it's worth spending more time trying to get the real ones to support the creators. YnM was cheap as chips when it was out in the US.

Hehe, I do buy. I watch unlicensed animes online, and occasionally buy an anime DVD, like my Death Note one. ^^
