DVD quality (from the Manga UK thread)

I know this might be somehow unrelated, but I just had to find a corner to voice my complaints. I found the quality of Manga's DVD of Black Butler II really abhorrent. Sample:
The light/shadow touches I loved so much in the TV airing are gone completely.
It's the first time I regret buying an anime DVD. As someone mentioned here before, why buy official releases if they have bootleg quality?

Hmm, I'm not a video expert but which parts of the picture specifically are the problem? It looks like a pretty standard TV vs DVD comparison to me; since a lot of digisubs use a higher resolution source than DVD nowadays it's normal for the official DVDs to look worse than the legally streamed (or pirated) TV versions. Greater availability of legal streams really turned me off buying DVDs over Blu-ray more quickly than any other factor ^^;

I'm not defending horrible-looking UK transfers, and of course I can see that the TV picture in your comparison is sharper and generally better. But I am not seeing anything there that is worse than the vast majority of UK DVD releases in recent memory. Am I missing something?

(If you have a timestamp I'll take the same shot from the US Blu-ray if you like.)

I'm going to be "that dick" and say it. Are you seriously complaining about and comparing an interlaced SD DVD to a HDTV Broadcast?
If you buy a DVD then expect crap quality in comparison.

Up to this point I haven't been paying attention to DVD quality issues to be quite frank, so that one instance was a real eye-opener for me. (I'll start to check my anime DVD collection now.) I'd appreciate it a lot! The screenshot is from the 7th episode, at 19:58.

Excuse my 'greenness', but yes, this is something I cannot comprehend with my logic. Why would anyone buy anime DVDs if the quality is worse than the TV broadcast/streaming? And considering that you can watch the streamed video as many times as you want?

Here you go. The BD transfer is actually pretty yuck for this show now that I look at it on my computer :S

I'm going to have a guess and say that's an SD Upscale? For a Bluray that looks pretty awful.
Not as bad as Funi's Spice and Wolf release, but still bad.

Thanks. Oh well. :roll: Is there any site for comparing US and UK releases? I'm bother by my UK DVD edition of Shiki, but since I only bought part 1 I'm considering importing part 2 from the US if it's any better.

Re: Manga Entertainment Discussion Thread.

I don't think there's a site dedicated to it, since there are relatively few videophiles in the UK and they either buy the US or UK edition, not both. By coincidence I happen to have Shiki too, so if you have a timestamp I can take a picture again.

It's episode 2 at 04:12. Many thanks, you are a great help!

Here you go, US BD version.

(If the reds look a little blocky the cause is a problem at my end so please ignore it.)
