Doormat women in anime

Is anyone else tired of the generic submissive female characters in anime?

To me it seems a sign of the writers being really lazy. It's like they just need a character to perform a function but don't want to bother giving her any depth.

I really can't understand people likeing Beldandy and similar characters. It's especially bad when they're playing the "love interest". What kind of man would be attracted to a girl like that? I can't imagine anything more boring.

Anyway thought I'd put that out there.

Hey, I have a similar rota for every day:
Get up late morning - PC - Lunch - Hobbies - Dinner - Hobbies again - Stay up 'til 4am - Sleep - Repeat.

I would say that's pretty boring, no? :p (Not that I'm expecting anything.)

But yeah, all Belldandy has is looks and a nice personality. She seems content with minimalism and only does things differently if Keichi has a problem.
I dont personally have a vendeta against them. I just expect them to exist in anime. There's always going to be fans that want a completely submitive character... It's just a common road to fantasy for some.

I do like the more minxy girls myself, adds character to them.

It's a lot different from western culture were it's usually women are these strong powerful outgoing people who can be as rude as they like.
To see more ladylike people is nice sometimes which i guess is what the creators are trying to highlight.
Of course there are always plenty of animes were the women are just competly of there head :p

Belldandy's character popularity peaked in the 1950's.

The movie is the only real keeper out of the whole franchise in my opinion. Decent it is.

Not too sure where that fits in.

What I'm talking about is the female characters who are 100% sweetness and joy.

I think I heard someone on a podcast once say that Deedlit from Lodoss was similar to Beldandy. I'd disagree. Deedlit tries to be cute and lady like but she also teases, gets pissed off and has selfish desires. I think like I said my biggest problem with these characters is when they're cast as the love interest.

I'm not into the whole idolizing anime characters thing but just look at the Naruto fanbase. Hinata is one of the most popular characters in it even though she doesn't really do anything. If I was into that kind of fantasizing I'd take Temari anyday. She can beat the crap out of me I'd still prefer her. Then again I'm not into that kind of thing.

I do find Hinata quite cute; I guess there's just something about girls who don't say **** no matter what you demand from them. As mentioned it's a nice change from the majority of western women who have grown out of the slapping habit now, only to adopt the much more successful and painful punching habit. Plus I'd rather have someone who says "Okay!" when I ask for a hot chocolate instead of someone who responds with "Get it yourself, you useless bag of shite."

I like Hinata as well as she could still kill you if she was so inclined.

Never been much of a fan of the submissive type either. The Oh My Goddess! anime series (all of them) are lost on me. That said I enjoy the humour in the manga and Belldandy's not so bad there as she takes action every now and then. (I've only read some of the first volumes though so perhaps she gets worse later)

Maybe it's reflective of the society it's created in? - even though that is probably a gross generalisation ;'/

It's never really bothered me anyway ;_;

I was refering to the boredom part, as she does seem bland for a character. "What kind of man would be attracted to a girl like that? I can't imagine anything more boring." If there are people like me that are (I admit) pretty boring in the world, there's gonna be girls like that too. I'm not sure what the attraction is, maybe it's because they think she's "easy".

I think if Keichi (sp?) ever ended up having "relations" with Belldandy she'd probably break.

Hell yeah I'm tired of it. I don't know how I managed to get through the first season of Ah! My Goddess. Thankfully I stopped the second season early when I sensed it was almost exactly the same as the previous season. I don't know how any guy can find that kind of girl attractive. Boooooooooorrrrring!

I'd take Kaname from Full Metal Panic! any day.

Eh. From what I've seen she's all evil and no sweetness.

Seriously though can anyone here imagine Keichi and Belldandy having sex and her not dieing as a result?

That's a no-brainer,but I was refering to everyone else drooling over her (as in fans).
As or the peeps in the animes, they're like puppets to the writer's whim... Like I know or care about that. :p

Umm... is this thread just saying, "Damn, Belldandy's such a doormat."?

Well, I know lots of the serious AMG fans get upset when people say this, and go off on long diatribes about her charatcer that are somewhat lost on me. I guess I can't really comment in depth on her personality as I haven't seen much of the series, but from what I did see she just seemed like a fairly passive personality type - although I'd side towards the boring type of passive as aversed to the interesting type of passive (e.g. most of the characters in Zettai Shounen).

I can't really think of any characters from other anime series that are really like this - Hinata's a poor example, as she's shy rather than passive.

Yeah, I prefer female characters with a bit more fire to their personality. Its far more entertaining and makes a nice change to men always being in charge.

It depends on the context in my opinion. Characters like Orihime in Bleach and so on are usualy just in there to provide a lighter side to a series with darker tones. And also it depends as some "doormat women" can become anything but, Nyu/Lucy from Elfen Lied is a perfect example of this. But when your talking about characters like Risa in D.N.Angel i agree with you it can just be annoying.

Nyu has the mind of a child. She isn't a doormat. She can't even speak properly.

On a side note I think one of the reasons I liked Eva was that it was absent of any such female characters. Most of the women in it are strong willed even if they are all mentally hilarious.
