"I don't like with this thread, so I'll make fun of the people who do!" Mmmm... mature.

Until you're man enough to discard your boyish loves, talk to the text. Anyone with Dragon Ball AND Bleach as favourites (+ Hellsing affection) needs to rethink their own maturity before commenting on my Gankutsuou-loving self.

Also, I was merely attempting to get into the spirit of this thread and ignite a discussion by typing the series + episode number. I'm far too intelligent to lower myself to the level of baiting others.

Shigofumi: 1-13 + Picture Dramas 1-7
Rescue Wings: 9-13

Aren't you the guy who tried to convince me that Naruto wasn't a kids show? Yeah, so that makes your first paragraph meaningless. Plus I'm proud of my ability to switch on a good Shonen show and relax and enjoy myself, so trying to insult me with Dragon Ball and Bleach rolls off my back (again, especially coming from a Naruto fan, which is in the exact same category as those shows).

Oh and yeah, I uncharacteristically "baited" you just then as I saw someone looking down on others (including myself) for using a thread, trying to get them out of this forum and into another one, and then sarcastically taking part in the thread when everyone shot down leaving to your other forum. It just rubbed me the wrong way, weirdly enough...

Go here and look at my (impressive) profile: http://myanimelist.net/profile/AironicallyHuman

Tell me where you see Naruto in my top ten.

Unlike you, I have more respect for myself than to list an endless shounen with an orange ninja as its lead in my top ten(s). I evolved beyond that stage a long time ago; becoming more perfect by doing so.

And, yes: Naruto is aimed at adults. There are ninjas, talking dogs, wars, huge frogs, boys screaming at each other, and all the other things you'd expect to see in adult works. Dragon Ball? Ha! All that has is power beams and power level bursts. (Over 9000, indeed...) You'd have to be a child mentally to respect a title like THAT. Naruto, however, is worthy of respect; I'd even show it my nan.

Why wouldn't someone with taste as near-perfect as my own NOT look down on lower class lifeforms? You're being downright nasty by suggesting I can't be true to myself.

Chop. Expect further bickering (as opposed to discussion) and mocking the taste of others in that thread to meet a similar fate.

I thought you could detect obvious sarcasm, Roy - I overestimated you. Now, I feel the need to leave the forum once more, after doing my bit for the greater good of the forum as a whole.

You can keep 'ColdSnake' cool, CC. You win.

You forgot I have no sense of humour? You've been away too long :)

Nothing seems to lead to flame wars faster than out of control sarcasm.

...well, you kinda did take me seriously when I told you to send me the **** I half-seriously demanded. Maybe it's me who's the slow one; not realizing you wouldn't be able to read me, even after that? It's hard to say.

Also: I'd win any flame war by default because I'd intentionally fan the flames. But it's boring; arguing over Naruto being the best shounen ever when that's obvious to those as smart as myself. I need more challenge to feel fulfilled, y'know?

Also bleach is pretty amazing, most people on this forum would agree the characters have a greater depth and personality to them than those in naruto.
Really? Explain this one to me. (No sarcasm intended).

Because all the main personalities in Naruto boil down to "is a big emo".

Not the Naruto bit, I wanted some elaboration on what makes the Bleach characters so much better. I mean, its known I adore One Piece, but that's not winning awards for "character development".

The Bleach characters have swords. In the mind of any child, that makes them better, by default. Who the hell wants to fcuk around with knives when you can go all Cloud Strife?

Only a DB fan who craves fight after fight with no character development would describe Naruto as emo. Others would view it more as an evolution; shoujoish emotional chatter being blended in with the usual boy vs. boy fighting nonsense. Before he went all ********ish, Sasuke was a firm favourite among fantards for a reason - because he had a tragic background that fueled his emotions and rivalry with the orange idiot.

I don't think stu was talking about character development, as such (at least, he didn't mention it). I wouldn't necessarily be. Just a better variety of equally simple personalities and characteristics.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, Naruto is still ace. But that's mainly because of the action and world building. It does have its share of cool characters, but nowhere near as many as Bleach, for me.

I find that Kakashi carries the entire Naruto series all on his own. I'm not that interested in the show itself and never really have been, but I'd definitely love to see the world revisited in future with a series all about the older, more interesting ninja. I can tolerate Naruto himself (barely) but I have never for a second found Sasuke anything other than completely irritating.

The One Piece cast has a much better hit rate for me. I like them all, other than Usopp (I'm always told off about this by my One Piece-worshipping other half but I can't help it). Bleach... well, I had certain expectations for the way it was going to play out which turned out to be wrong, and I never really recovered any interest in the show after that. Dragonball had plenty of character development and stuff like Naruto was heavily inspired by it, so I'm not sure why fans of the current stuff bash it to seem edgy and intellectual. It's popular because it's a good story; a campy dub and a bunch of long fights alone don't cause a series to retain that level of respect for so many years.

I've obviously never been the real demographic for shounen series (fujoshi discussion from the other thread notwithstanding) so the age concerns never bothered me. If it's good fun, then it's worth a look whether I'm 10 or 100. I'm glad that this is actually turning into a discussion as I was expecting to have to lock this thread within minutes due to a "SJ trinity" flamewar >_>

The world would be pretty boring if we all liked the same thing.

Kakashi is pretty awesome, although I do tend to like your archetypal "ridiculously strong character who is there just to get beaten up to show just how much stronger the main character is" characters. There are at least two or three other characters that immediately come to mind that I suspect you would like, but getting around the fact that you really don't like the show and the "main" characters would be hard.

It's not like killing is unheard of, though. It ups the ante and gets the "anyone can die" factor rising. Beating up, fine, but death? I like to believe there's usually a few more mechanics behind that one.

Whoops, I didn't mean to start some sort of debate. Still, some are taking it seriously, so that's good. It is a fun debate, though one that is essentially flawed as Shonen by definition is a kids genre, but much like the comic book geeks in our western world, it has spread to older fans or held fans as they grew up. I respect someone who says "Yeah, it immature, but damn I love it!" a lot more than someone who goes "What? Me? No... I don't like a kids thing... it's, er, for adults! It is!!"

I'll admit that beyond very basic bad guy with tragic past eventually turns good stories, Dragon Ball is more about the great fight scenes, but hey... so what? If I went on a film forum and said I like martial arts films because of the well done and exciting fight scenes, not the story about someones master being killed by a rival school (AGAIN), it would be tolerated a lot more because martial arts films aren't aimed at children, yet it's the exact same thing.

Bleach on the other hand had an amazing run, the first establishing arc had its moments, but the Soul Society arc on the other hand had some great storytelling and a brilliant unexpected reveal to the plot at the end. Now the just finished Arrancar Arc on the other hand was more about the action, but by that point I already cared enough about the characters to want to see the show through to the end. Plus the action was damn good, and Kubo's artwork is often stunning.

One Piece I have only seen a little of, but it reminds me of early Dragon Ball, and that's a good thing. Naruto I've seen all the canon stuff from the first show, and I'm up to and currently watching vol. 3 of Shippuden, released by Manga, and its good. The lead character annoys the hell out of me and the show has some serious, DBZ-level pacing problems (the most recent example would be how long Naruto and Kakashi were running after Deidara in that canyon. It felt like forever!) but once again the show has its exciting moments, but never have I thought "This show is way more mature that those other Jump! shows I have!" No, the only time I've done that is for Death Note (how was that posted in Jump! ?)

I guess I better wrap this up before I do a paragraph on every other Shonen show I've seen. I guess I'll say that the Shonen genre is a fine thing to be a fan of, even if its just one show. Sure a Shonen fan like myself (not that I don't like other genres of anime) is more likely to be made fun of by someone who thinks his long list of obscure and/or mature anime somehow means he's "better" than me, despite the fact that I wonder if he's even watched half of his own collection at all, let alone more than once, which is just sad. "This anime is great, its gotten loads of press from this person and this person!" "Have you ever watched it?" "... once...." "Did you actually like it?" "Yeah... sure... I guess..."

It's like being a comic book fan in the middle of a classic reading group, I like both things, but since I like this less mature thing, I must be stupid.
