The North American home video distributor Discotek announced on Tuesday that it licensed the first season of the Lupin the 3rd television anime series for release on DVD next spring.

The first season consists of the first 23 episodes of the Lupin the 3rd television series. Director Hayao Miyazaki of Ghibli fame directed 14 episodes in the first season.

The second season of Lupin the 3rd was previously licensed by Geneon Entertainment USA and aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block.

Monkey Punch's original manga began serialization in 1967 and features Lupin the Third, the great nephew of gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. He is routinely pursued by Investigator Zenigata while attempting to steal priceless items and woo women.

The manga was adapted into numerous movies, including a Detective Conan crossover special and most recently Lupin III: the Last Job in 2010.

Thanks to tratious for the news tip.

Yes. Hell. Freakin. Yes.

Now, come over the atlantic Lupin...we have many things for you to steal.

Eh? Words fail me, I'd have put a substantial amount of money on this not happening. My hat goes off to you, Discotek. :) Please release Cobra.

Great news to wake up to this morning. I'll definitely be buying to replace my crummy old Italian discs (and see the bits I don't have).

Wow... that's... AWESOME!

I hope it's getting dubbed, and that they use the same dub cast as Geneon's.
lol no way in hell, if it has an existing one they may use that, that's it.
FotNS was sub-only.

They already have for some of them.

Wow excuse me me while my jaw drops through the floor, this is the best news ever,Discotek made my life complete when they released Fist of the North Start tv series and now this, just simply mind blowing, and since Lupin series 1 is only 23 episodes i,m sure it will come complete in one nice boxset. :D

Excellent news. This will do a lot better packaged as a series than the insane decision to start releasing it as singles a few years back. I'll certainly be buying.

Dubs? We don't need no stinkin' dubs. No other VA (English or Japanese) could ever be half the Lupin Yasuo Yamada was. Except Kanichi Kurita, who actually manages to be about two-thirds the Lupin Yasuo Yamada was, so my point is still valid.

There is a good chance they will release more of the movies/tv specials, they have already released,Lupin the 3rd Episode 0,Lupin the 3rd-Fuma Conspiracy and the live-action movie Lupin the 3rd-Strange Psychokinetic Strategy.

Time to break out the patented Christor Happy Dance. This is just awesome! I guess the Discotek releases of other Lupin releases sold pretty well for them.

It'll be an import jobby, as there is no way in hell this is coming here...

That one came out of left-field. I'd prefer some of the later TV specials, tbh, especially after reading what VivisQueen had to say about the series 1 episodes she watched, but this trend of older anime releases is definitely one I'd like to see continue.

What is even happening in the world...

I won't even dare to dream for Prof. Irony's cheeky request, but this sure is some way to go!

So yeah, import job for me too.
