While the worldwide popularity of the Death Note franchise (with its live action, anime and manga incarnations) continues unabated, the artist/writer team that created its original story, writer Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata, have their next manga project debuting in this week's issue of Japan's popular manga anthology Shonen Jump. Called Bakuman and simply described as "explosive", fans of Death Note should be very interested in keeping an eye on this project.

To be honest, I'm really interested in seeing what they come up with. Despite its rather cliche premise now, when Death Note first appeared it was a genuinely exciting and refreshing new story. My only worry is that because not much is known about Bakuman, it might end up being just some pointless one-shot etc.

I got the feeling of it being similar to Hikaru no Go more-so than Death Note. I think it'll show how the characters will progress and the stress of being a mangaka, or.. failing to be a mangaka. I say its similar to HnG because how the characters do/might age over time and the fact its (~probably) character-driven more than story-driven.

..Before anyone points out Ohba didn't do HnG, I know. -__-

From the image I just picture Death Note with pirates. Maybe when they write somebodys name on an old treasure map a pirate comes and kills the person who's name was written. Now that would be neat.

I think the pirate image is from another, unrelated manga series called Inumarudashi, which is also mentioned in the same article on ANN.

Since reading Jayme's message, I went to check if there's any scanslations out and there are. As he says, it's nothing like Death Note.

Read the chapter a while back actually, when it came out. I wasn't much of a fan of death note, but i still had a look into it, this definitely was completely different. Have to say i liked the wee inclusions of death note and one piece. It feels a bit like they are planning to go about explaining via bakuman how hard it could be to get to be a successful mangaka, via manga. I think i may stick to it for a couple more chapters before i really say if its worth following.
