For those who don't know, Darker than Black (DtB) is an anime still airing in Japan. We're currently up currently up to episode 20, with (I think) 24 episodes scheduled.
DtB started brilliantly with the first 6 episodes, each separated into 2 episode stories, living up to the title with some pretty disturbing deaths shown. The story, while left most unexplained during the first 6 episodes, got revealed bit by bit over the first 6 episodes, leaving me to believe DtB was building up to something greater...
The first thing that drawed me into DtB was the main character, Hei, a character who's unknown past and hard to read mind made me recall Spike Spiegel of Cowboy Bebop fame a lot during the first few episodes. Insanely cool when fighting with his mask on, smiling and caring when around people who don't know his true identity and cold when around people in the know - That's Hei in a nutshell.
Sadly, the excellent action and unpredictable story started to stop with episode 7. 7-8 were meant as comical episodes with a serious story behind them, but the plot turned out to be non-existent, ending up simply being about body odor. The next 2 were enjoyable enough, even though they were very predictable. DtB went downhill further with the following 2 average episodes. The show then picked back up with 13-16, before 2 badly executed and scripted episodes in the shape of 17-18 became the worst episodes in the series to date.
DtB has had WAY too many 'filler' episodes. The mystery thing might've made me interested in DtB at first but a show without near to any main plot is just weak...the story of anything needs to get deeper than the occasional back-story here and there to be thought of as anything other than trash. I thought the first 6 episodes were simply the introduction, and I didn't care too much about the plot being explained in detail when everything was being done excellently outside of the plot being explained... Shame the series failed to build on how awesome it started. A potentially awesome serious wasted, in my opinion.
Oh well, at least the music is awesome!
