D. Gray Man

I'm considering checking out D. Gray Man - it seems to be very popular in Japan, and the story is intriguing. I want to know what you all think of it, though - should I go for it?

Since I've read all of it so far I think it's fair for me to come in and tell you what you want to know. ;D

I personally think it's one of the best series in Jump, not as big as One Piece/Naruto/Bleach but still as good if not better in certain ways, don't watch the anime, it's full of filler. The manga has extremely good art and the story is also pretty good, but only possible downside is that the story moves a little fast. Unlike most Shounen series were the fights drag on like at least 10 chapters the battles in D.Gray-man last at like 3 chapter maximum.

I say go for it, the first volume is like random things introducing the concepts into D.Gray-man so it's just to settle you in, second manga volume is were the story really begins/takes off.

Thanks Lupus Inu! You've convinced me - both the first and second volumes are now on order from the book depository! ^_^

Is D. Gray Man 'mature'? Is it mature in a 'Death Note' kind of way, or is it closer to Naruto and One Piece or Bleach in regards to genre?

Well, it's much darker than One Piece or Naruto, characters always struggle to fight and win, there's comedy of course to lighten the situations that's expected in a Shounen. The series is slightly darker for a Shounen series since of course it is set in a Gothic Era. It's not as tense as Death Note but it does have a gritty feel to it at times. It's a mix of both One Piece and Death Note in terms of atmosphere and level of matureness.

Sounds incredibly awesome! Thank you for your help, Lupus Inu! ;] I shall use this thread to discuss the series once I have read the first two volumes.

How many volumes have you collected; or do you read it online?

Both. I started collecting them, just dedicating myself to the Viz volumes, but I was only on volume 3, and that was October 2006, there was only like 9 volumes released in Japan, so there was like a three month gap between each one, couldn't wait any longer, I WANTED MORE. So I read it all on the internet. Still buy the volumes though, since I <3 the series. I got all 7 volumes released so far.

Eh, it's alright, first 12 episodes are canon, then it goes onto filler, some which are semi-canon as the creator wanted to include in the series but couldn't others which are just filler, which although some are decent others are just not very good, it's worth watching if you're willing to give it to try, but me personally just gave up on it. Though now it's getting to the epic part of the series. The OST to the anime is a bit bland but fits, the openings are quite good too, the third opening is amazing, but I wouldn't recommend you looking at it, uber spoilers and the endings are... ok too, most of them I don't like though.

Right, I think I'll give the TV series a miss for the time being, anyway! I wonder why it hasn't been licensed for release in the West, or has it?

Wow, I'm really hyped for this manga now! Probably because I don't know what to expect, and because I know very little of what it's actually about (something that rarely happens; I usually have manga or anime spoiled in one way or another before I actually read/see it).

Nope, I don't think the anime is licensed yet... and if it is I'm personally hoping for FUNimation to license it myself. ;p

Also, I'll give you a BRIEF synopsis if you like - Otherwise leave it be and just read it when you get them, knowing nothing of the series.

Yeah, that would be awesome!

Nah, I already know that it's about exorcists and occult organisations, anyway. I want to start this manga not knowing anything significant about it ^_^

Oh, and if I don't like it I'm holding you responsible, Lupus Inu.

I finished the second volume of this last night, and I must say it's really after picking up! I was unsure at the start whether I'd enjoy this enough, but now I'm certain it's all good!
