D.Gray-man

My thoughts on episode 12

Like most of its Shonen Jump brethren, D.Gray-man is weakly balanced on a thin line between generic and fun. Just this evening I’ve caught up to episode 12 and feel torn by the somewhat superficial character development. Moody bishonen Kanda is a good example of how utterly archetypal some of these characters are – to put it bluntly, Kanda is a carbon copy of Sasuke from Naruto, right down to refusing to give up a fight until he has killed “that manâ€

The only thing Kanda and Sasuke have in common is what you just mentioned, Kanda is an idiot where Sasuke is considered a genius, Sasuke thinks about how he does things while Kanda usually runs in head first and does whatever he can pull off with Mugen. But I'm not going to have an entire arguement in this topic about it. >__<

But still, those screenshots are pretty nice, is the last one when Allen's eye is damaged?

I loved it, the ending was something you could see coming a mile away but it was another great episode in my opinion.

I love the promo for ep.13 especially the new exorcist with the giant hammer

Nope - it's when the akuma is told to commit suicide. Allen clearly loses it during this scene and I suppose the black bleeding of his eye is intended to symbolize the evil inside him bursting to explode ala Naruto's "nine tails" moments and Ichigo's "half hollow crazy face".

Yup, I'm enjoying this show too - and the new exorcist at the end of the episode seemed mighty cool and oddly enthusiastic too - no angst, thank god!

Thats what I'm looking forward to, a non-angst character who kicks ass

Is this one of those shows that just go on and on? I like the style but if it's another 'I FIGHT YOU! YOU FIGHT ME!' chucklebrothers misadventure then I won't bother.

It's Shonen Jump... but it's not an immediately archetypal story like say Naruto or Bleach; in fact it's very similar in style to Fullmetal Alchemist. I've quite enjoyed it so far, but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't enjoy big-action-big-cast anime like FMA or Naruto.

I love FMA, it's one of my top series. It's not the action I don't like it's the fact that most series like that seem to go on and on with little more than just a bunch of fights than can be padded out and stretched over 30 or so episodes. FMA on the other hand was compressed into a neat package considering how far it could have been stretched. If Naruto was like that I would probably appreciate it a lot more.

Anyway what I'm asking is does this series have a set ending that will rear it's head sometime in the future or is it predicted to just carry on until it gets cancelled?

It's on-going, and it may soon have filler, the manga only has 90 chapters or so out. It's on-going until the manga is finished in SJ, most likely. Btw it will eventually have quite the big cast.

I'd say it's quite likely to last for at least 52+ episodes. The set goal is basically to stop this "fat chap" from trying to end the world; he has many minions (like the purple haired girl in the above screen-cap) to protect him and it will likely take a long time to get past them all.

So far it hasn't really been about the "power ups" and "training" though, there are no annoyingly yappy kids either. It's mainly a big action adventure.

What the hell, I'll give it a shot. I have some free time coming up this weekend so i'll check out the first five or so episodes to see if I can get into it. :)

Ahh nice; I guess this new board is converting a few new viewers then! :) Episode 5 is the end of a 3 part story arc so that would be a perfect place to start.

Can't see it going past the 52 mark as its only 'the fat man' a few lower levelled lackies/sidekicks. I kinda hope this doesn't go on like Naruto or Bleach as those two are currently killing my anime space.

Naruto follows the manga series and so will D.Gray-Man, the Millenium Earl won't be hard to take out either, it will go past 52, I can assure that.

Aw Dammit, oh well I live in the hope it is a good extended series and not a Naruto-esq filler fualed series (can't wait for Naruto to get back on track with Sasuke)

Sorry to bump this topic back up but i've seen the first episode now and I can see the comparasons to FMA. It seems to me like a mix of FMA and Chrono Crusade. I just hope that the first episode isn't misleading like Get Backers was and that it keeps the quality up throughout and doesn't descend into a series of overlong stand offs. So yeah I liked it. :)

Am I right in thinking the series is actualy 52 episodes long? All the info i've found seems to point to that.

it's upto ep 36 so far so 52 eps is probably who long it'll be. It started great but has been pretty boring lately with what I've read has been alot of filler :( I've not read the manga but some eps just screamed FILLER!!!!!

I've come to be warey of the way people say filler. After all some people called the ending to FMA filler... I'll see where it goes if it's only 52.

No, it really is filler i.e. random episodic adventures ("lets go shopping") that are completely stupid and out of wack with the story. I must admit I stopped watching D.Gray-man around about episode 15-20 because the plot takes a Naruto/Bleach style vacation.
