I don't like Shirow's style much (don't kill me) and have fond memories of the original poster art for GitS in the back of my old comic shop haunt, so personally the iconic one works better for me. Slipcovers are a happy medium, though We had a laugh about the Mnemosyne UK cover in its thread recently but I'm still bewitched by the original art shown in the link. It looks so much more interesting than the revealed cover art.R
