Coursework Help (Yeah, its related to Anime)

Now I'm not sure if this would fit in General Anime Discussion so I'm gonna put it here at let Rui move it :)

Now for my coursework I've gotta write a magazine article and I'm thinking of doing it on the 'Culture' surrounding Anime. Do you guys think this could be good? Ideas? Help?

Thanks guys.

Sounds like a good plan. Anything you have absolute knowledge of and examiners / teachers likely know nothing about is good. You could more or less make it up as long as it was well written. ;)

An overall view of the UK anime scene would be a good place to start - how it developed, where it's going, problems it has faced / will face (I'm thinking censorship, social stigma, companies in trouble) along the way.

I was thinking the same

So can you guys give me some sources for some of this info? I'm gonna need a hand getting info on how it developed etc.

Thanks again :p

You're going to have to be specific in what you want. You can't give us a vague word like "culture" and expect us to give you exactly what you want.

Okay can you tell me how and when it developed in the UK? Any past difficulties it faced?

Any past difficulties? Like Legend of the Overfiend being released and it pretty much destroying the Japanese market in the UK for a while? With Geneon pulling out completely.

Manga Ent. originally released the most perverted/bloody stuff they could, even going as far as to add swear words in order to get 18 ratings. This caused newspapers to start calling anime sick, calling for it to be removed from UK stores...or something like that.

Could you find me a source?

Does anyone know roughly when things went out of this crisis?

That's fairly accurate. Manga were a driving force in bringing anime to the UK, but they did do it in a sensationalistic way which saw it demonised by the Daily Mail brigade. Very similar to how computer games have been treated in the last couple of years. A lot of people blame them for giving anime a bad name but it's worth remembering that witout them generating so much pubilcity it would never have taken off in the way it did. That would make for a good topic.

It ain't easy finding sources Spyro, I've just had a look myself and can't seem to find a good account of the history of anime in the UK. when you know this stuff you just presume someone's written an account of it somewhere...

 Yeah well I'll jot this all down and bring it in for a start tommoro. Il speak to my teacher and see what she thinks.

When I was doing an article (I did an awful job), I asked for help on the other 'major' UK anime forum. Someone PMed me with scans from a magazine.

You're in luck: I still have them on a CD. I'll upload them for you...

I doubt you could try and reupload could you? Its just they wont show up and when I click the link to look at them through Imageshack it comes up that it cant find the picture :(

Thanks alot though man these'll really help.

To verify those links work for me as well; perhaps Imageshack was feeling a little funny briefly yesterday.

Other suggestions of things to include could be conventions (and how they've grown over here from a few little local meets to anime/cosplay pretty much having taken over the huge London Expo meets entirely) and how the growth of the internet has had both positive and negative repercussions for the fanbase in the UK. The closure of the long-running London Anime Club this year was partially blamed on online fan sites and digisubs having removed some of its purpose.

Thanks they work now :)

Now I'm sorry to say my english teacher said today I have to do it on... Firework Safety. Yeah its a load of balls I know -.-

Sorry guys, thanks all the same though.

Tch, if you didn't know what you were allowed to do then you shouldn't have asked for help. All those precious seconds I wasted finding the CD, and uploading the images that were on it... I ain't helping you again, dragon boy.

So your well intentioned research conducted in your own time was a total waste.

And the government wonders why kids hate school and bunk off half the time

I wouldn't call waving a white flag and askin for help research. Then again, I did the same thing myself in a similar situation.

 She wonders why I hate English Coursework too... This happens with her. This is the woman who says 'If your having fun you've done it wrong'
