The main thing I felt Madhouse improved was the background art. When reading the manga, I felt everything looked the same and that made the world come across as dull, but when watching the anime I never felt like that. The excellent use of colour helped out a lot.


Until the end, there's not a lot between the manga and anime in terms of differences - near to nothing, in fact - so, up until that point, the anime obviously wins because the artwork is lovely, it's animated, it has colour and the soundtrack is top class. As ever, Madhouse only failed because of their inability to not screw up endings.
