Classic review of Heavenly Sword

That was an amusing review. Funny I was recently discussing this game with someone over MSN, and his one-track opinion was annoying me. He told me Heavenly Sword looked like a pile of crap, and that the PS3 demo was awful, plus it was getting bad reviews. I told him that I agree, people said the demo was short, but it has been getting good scores. He then responded by saying "What, sevens are supposed to be good?" and I said "Er, yes. Sevens and eights are generally considered good scores on planet Earth." Maybe it's just me, but a seven means very good in my book and when reviewing games myself you'd be lucky to even get a seven. Rant over.

Yeah i agree with you entirely Nem, i think the main problem with people like that is that they expect a HUGE amount from games these days - everything seems to have to be the sandbox game of GTA but with the graphics of well.....Heavenly Sword hehe.
Specialised games are poo pooed by most people as linear - if you approach HS how you're supposed to as a truly cinematic and more importantly EYE-CANDY game you're not going to be disappointed, enter it thinking its Ninja Gaiden and you're going to be surprised as curiously enough - it isnt called Ninja Gaiden. People have huge expectations for a console which has only been out for less than a year - its hardware is so overwhelming its taken the devs this long to start getting their heads around it.

Rant over :p

People need to learn the simple ability of taking in a game for what it is, and not constantly whining about what it could have been. I'm not saying be ignorant about awful games, there has to be awful games so there can be excellent ones. I'm just saying there's no point in increasing your expectations or even having ANY expectations about a game before you actually play it. I'm waiting for MGS4, and the only expectation I have for the game right now is that I assume it's going to involve stealth. Just expect the basics, don't delve too deep into what a game is going to offer, because that's when you start proving yourself wrong when you eventually play it.

A solid gaming philosophy you have there. I respect that :D

Expectations can make or break a game these days, its a sad state of affairs but the devs themselves are shooting themselves in the foot what with releasing a good percentage of said rumours. If they just kept quiet and stopped making these "revolutionary game engine" and "unparralleled multiplayer" statements i think we'd all start enjoying games again instead of comparing it to x or complaining about the lack of y.
