Children of Men

British sci-fi is an interesting genre. Cityscapes like London, especially when deserted, seem perfectly suited to host a dystopian apocalypse. We've seen it in 28 Days Later, and now I've just seen in it in Children of Men. This was an awesome, hard boiled science fiction movie filmed in the UK. I just wish I'd bothered to see it at the cinema.

Anyone else blown away by this movie?

Fantastic movie, and considering I was only watching it on my laptop, I can hardly imagine what some of the scenes would have been like to experience in a cinema with the giant screen and surround sound.

Pull my finger?

It really does sound interesting but sadly it isn't playing at any cinemas near me either. *sighs* I guess I'll keep my eyes open for the DVD...

The 'ravaged London' of 28 Days Later has always reminded me of a seemingly forgotten sci-fi vampire flick, Lifeforce, in which the final showdown takes place in a ruined version of our nation's capital with an appearance by Patrick Stewart and vampires everywhere!

We rented it out on Sky Box Office tonight, but I've just ordered it on DVD (£13.99 Delivered from Play.com) too. It's one of those movies that has a serious look at the future, an England where there is very little hope. It's not the London of V For Vendetta, rather it's closer to the war-torn visions of Europe from Saving Private Ryan. Definitely worth watching again.

It takes the politics of today (especially the tensions surrounding illegal immigration and terrorism) and twists it with the fact that no one in the world has given birth for nearly two decades. In other words, mankind is dying out and civilization is turning upside down. In a world with no children; no future, the adults are running amok. Virtually all of the other countries have been overrun during the panic of a global pandemic and the UK is basically the only safe place left, but with all the illegal immigration and so on, the government is fighting back with harsh methods. If you ever wanted to see England destroyed, this is the movie for you! :)
