Castle of Cagliostro

Death Scythe
If any of you get the chance to see this i strongly recommend it. It's a bit more manic and 'cartoony' than Miyazaki's more recent stuff but every minute is pure entertainment. one of the most hilarious and fast-paced anime adventures i've een yet.

Just happened to watch it again last night actually. Easily up there as amongst the best action adventure movies of all times. It hits all the cliche's perfectly, and does everything with panache.

That bit where Jigen gets Lupin in a submission hold and tells him to knock off the 'cool suffering loner' act, I just bust out loud laughing. It's so true, it's such a stereotype in these films, I couldn't help but laugh when they pointed out that's what he was doing. I forgot that the movie was made decades ago.

It's one of those shows that I can watch with this kid like grin attached to my face all the way through.

You going to put a review up on your site then?

I saw it on TV years ago. I wasn't keen on the animation style then and it isn't something I'd buy to see if I'd enjoy it more now!!
A lot of people really like it but it's just not "my thing".

I agree with Miaka here im afraid, saw a friends copy of this a while ago and it really wasnt something I could get into.

I keep hearing people say how the animation quality turned them off and they couldnt'watch it because of that.

When I bought it I felt the same way. I wasn't expecting much from a movie that was released back in the late 70's / early 80's.

But by the time of the first car chase scene, I had completely forgotten about the older animation and was just loving the movie as it was. It really is great, I don't care about the animation quality.

If you haven't been able to watch it through, then at least try. Odds are you won't be paying attention to the old animation quality and will instead be wondering how Lupin is going to pull off his next crazy stunt.

I just can't stand Lupin!! He's ugly and gangly, it isn't just the animation style, it's having to look at Lupin. Anime for me is entertainment, so if I don't find it entertaining, I don't watch!!!
It's just one of those personal opinion thingies

I'm the same way really. Sadly the way a charecter looks tends to really be important to me in an anime , if I dont like the charecter designs im less likely to enjoy the anime as a whole. Lupin is just a bit too ugly in general for me to like watching him. I can sit through an anime in which I love the charecter designs that has no plot , easier than I can one with a great plot but ugly charecters. :)

Hey! me too! Ever watched Saint Beast?! It's full of gay bishounen that I can stare at all day but there's no plot and little story but who cares if I can drool all day

Personally i love the characters designs, and surely all those Cowboy Bebop fans out there must have noticed Spike Spiegel is just Lupin with an afro and a slightly snazzier suit.

Not quite. Lupin's more, well, lively. Can't believe that people are slating the animation in this - it was made in 1979! It had Miyazaki involved! Nuff said!

The fact Miyazaki directed it was the only reason i watched it.

Pretty good overall. I hope the possible Spelberg directed LA Lupin film is based on this.

Just to clarify i wasn't comparing their personalities just their aesthetic similiarites. Spike's more akin to Jigen anyhow......

Well, Dreamworks hold the rights to it.... Since Spelberg likes Lupin the 3rd (check the Castle of Cagliostro dvd case) it would make sense for him to do it ;)

If Spielberg did that, it would be like, an animé to film conversion that didn't suck. Wow.

Oh, and favourite scene is when Zenigata goes into the printing lab with Fujiko and camera right behind him. Absolutely fantastic scene.
