Yep. Lupin's the apparent descendant of a fictional character who was originally made in France. Once the French caught wind that there was this Japanese show making money off their creation, they tried to sue. During the legal proceedings, western companies changed Lupin's name to disaccociate themselves from the whole thing. The French lost their case on ground that the Japanese version had already been around for 20-odd years...

In terms of name changes, there are a couple 'Rupan' films out there where the name change is inspired by the Japanese pronunciation of his name. 'Wolf' comes from the word Lupine I think... it's a bit more of a tenuous link that one.

If you want a different dub of Castle of Cagliostro where they use his proper name - look out for the version Manga released over here a few years back. It's out of production now, but a trawl through ebay brings a few copies up. The cover looks like this:

I actually have the old Manga Ent version, but also the more recent Optimum, which was sent as a review copy. The dubs ARE different, but IMO the aspect ratio of the Optimum one is better - it also has a short intro from Jon Clements as a DVD extra iirc.

Having listened to both, I much prefer the Manga one (and I'd never thought I'd say that about a Manga dub :lol: )

Pity it is out of print now, but my DvD copy is well stashed :)
 
Didn't David Hayter play Lupin/Wolf in the Manga Ent. version? I saw that version yonks ago when it was released on video, but I got the Optimum DVD last year -- can't actually remember the older one enough to compare them :p
