Cartoons; Art?

By a very ambiguous definition, a cartoon (I'm going off most cartoons produced recently.) is most definitly considered art.

However, in a cartoon, the proportioning of characters is dropped, the facial features are exaggerated to some point that the creator doesn't have to possess any knowledge of anatomy, and then we have the fact that most cartoons are made in block colors (minus the occasional multi-medium background).

Whereas in anime; the general requirements (for a project worth producing) are as follows:

- Excellent execution of idea's, plots, character development, story development etc.
- Excellent, or highly proficient knowledge of human anatomy (adapted to the creators 'style' (a STYLE, not a gross manipulation of body parts suited to the artists own ineptitude in drawing actual bodies.)
-Consistency (in everything)

It might just be me, but the slop that gets produced today seriously takes virtually no artistic talent to make, it's like the characters are becoming more and more battered due to the gradually declining bar of animating talent.

There is the occasional kickass show, but for the most part- it's a big pile of くそ.

No real offense to serious cartoonists, but most things today considered cartoons are easily comparable to.. well, doodles.

I understand your argument Kurogane, but there are far too many cartoons in production at the moment to really put them in the same jail sentance. Don't get me wrong, there is a hell of a lot of crap out there. I would have thought it would be the same for japanese cartoons too. I've seen some pants anime in the past.

The problem we have over here is the fact that cartoons are primarily aimed at kids. This, together with playfull (if not poor) storylines doesn't leave much for the older generation. If you see what I'm saying. Thanfully, slowly but surely, the UK is reaching towards anime open palmed. So I see hope for things changing in the future .

Oh yeah, this is all IMO like

I get worried when we have kids possible as young as 8+ watching things like Grim Adventures and such. I know it's all artistic violence and such, but the actual viewing of people rippings skin off and such does seem grewsome for kids that old. Even I think it's odd, and we watch Elfen lied, with its rivers of blood.

Yeah, I definately like anime more than others, because of the more realistic feel (of course, comical animes do have a lot of deformed/chibi characters, but that's just their style).

Most cartoons are nothing anymore, Teh odd show comes along with subtle Adult Humor which is always good and fun.

Most cartoons now a days are made completely in flash, and the animation being the last part of the process [It seems]. Take Cartoon Network's Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends; The main character is a blue oval blob called Bloo, But he does have somewhat of a personality, Which is also a good thing. Another Cartoon Network show has to be The Grim Adventures. . ., The creator does seem like the kinda demented person you would see doodling in a dark room, The humor is great, The character look poor, yo!.

Bah, I'm just ranting about Cartoons now. ZIM And Ren FTW

Cartoons have no continuity, Whether they are made for kids or not, They are never animated to a awe inspiring level, They are made to be something to stick on teh tellies when you are bored out of your gawd damn head.

Lastly, Would you call South Park ART?!?! Uhh No.
