I remember the original CCS being on TV when I was (much) younger (as "Cardcaptors"), though I never watched it. Is Clear Card stand alone or does it help to have seen the original series?

It’s a direct sequel, part 1 has an OVA that bridges the gap, but I had to seek out the CCS manga to give me a quick grounding.

I do have the manga (in omnibus form) as it happens. I know that Clear Card has a manga adaptation as well. Do you know how many volumes that is or is it still ongoing?

It’s the other way around, anime adapts the manga in both cases. Clear card is still ongoing.
