Can you help me with Robotech...?

Hi all,

I have a query regarding the Robotech Macross Anime. (My interest has been sparked by Ryo Chan and hopeful_monster by identifying for me the Valkyries from Robotech, of which I used to have a model as a child).

I am looking to buy the Robotech: Complete Macross Saga boxset DVD. I have also come across the Macross Plus x3 DVD boxset as well.

So I was wondering where the Macross Plus boxset fits in, in relation to the Robotech: Complete Macross Saga boxset? I've read that the Macross Plus boxset goes between Robotech Series I and II, but I'm confused: Does this mean that the Robotech: Complete Macross Saga boxset contains both a Series I and a Series II, or does it just contain Series I? How many Series are there anyway???

I wish to 'start at the start' of the Robotech anime and I hope the above is putting me on the right track. :)

Cheers.

Well i guess techincally speaking Macross Plus would go between the Macross Saga and the Masters (Series 2 of Robotech) but Macross Plus isn't related to Robotech, its set in the same universe as Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (The show that was edited to become Robotech: The Macross Saga) But other then that there isn't really any links between the original macross and macross plus other then the original SDF-1 appearing at the finale, plus one of the characters sings a minmay song There are three series in the oringal Robotech show, not counting the recent Shadow Chronicles, the first being Macross Saga, the second being the Masters and the third being the New Generation.

As said, it isn't really part of the Robotech universe. Robotech is an american hybrid bastardization of 3 totally non-related series. Macross is the first one of those series.

I don't know if you're aware, but they have just released all of the Robotech series as one big boxset. ( The one you show, just contains the first 'saga' ) If you're thinking of buying the whole lot then this will save you some money.

Because Robotech is kind of like a Bastard son, and no-one ever tried to crow-bar Plus into the Robotech universe, they're only kind of related. However, since Macross Plus never has that much to say about Macross original either, you can view it as a standalone or create your own fiction for what it has to do with Robotech 1 if you wish.

Thanks for all the help!

Can someone please tell me more about this adapting of Robotech from the 'original' Super Dimensional Fortress Macross show?
I think I'll be getting the Robotech series anyway, but I'm intrigued to know what the orignal series were, that Robotech is adapted from? Macross is the first, but then......?
Also how does Robotech and the original Macross/etc shows differ?

Oh God, that's a question. :D

Best way to answer that and save my poor fingers from typing way, way too much, - I'll just link the Wikipedia page for Robotech. ( Although as with any Wikipedia page, things might or might not be 100% right. )

I think the most pronouced changes were to the names of the characters and to the mecha, and the inclusion of snippets of animation from the show that would go onto become Robotech the Masters. There was also a Robotech movie released eons ago that i can recall watching as a child which was a changed version of Megazone 23.
