Can someone test if this is region B/2?

Hi all!

I have been trying to purchase a DVD version of Good Luck Girl!/Binbougami Ga! Preferably the dubbed version as that's the version i saw and loved. The problem is that this has been release by Funimation and i can't seem to find a version that is Region B/2. I don't have a Blu-Ray player so i can only play the DVD version, but while the Blu-Ray is region free the same cannot be said for the DVD, that tends to be Region 1. I have found many places that sell this but i am unsure whether they would play here in the UK, so is there anyone who could test whether the DVD is region free/2 or is there anyone who knows where i can get a region free/2 version. Thanks

Just for reference these are some of what i initially found:

In case you don't already know, if your computer has a DVD drive then you effectively have a region free DVD player already.

That can't be taken as a absolute - some drives are very resistant (the Matshita in my old laptop for example -there was no region free firmware for it and it couldn't be gainsaid by software)

Does this actually work? I was looking to see if my laptop (Toshiba Satellite) was region free and someone said to try VLC media player, which people said was a region free media player, do you think this would work?

It works for me...

Then again, when my laptop drive started playing up with writeable media, I brought an external drive to use instead. Seeing as the laptop drive still works for pressed DVDs and CDs, I set the internal drive to R1 and kept the external to R2, and use VLC on either for R3 and R4 discs.

EDIT: Do you have a DVD player? If so, try googling its make and model name to see if it can be hacked for multi-region playback. Sometimes it's as easy as just pushing a few buttons on its remote.

EDIT again: This page might help, although I've never used it...

I haven't ever had a computer with a drive which couldn't be persuaded to be region free somehow, though I guess some are stubborn. VLC is definitely the easiest way and very much worth trying since it's easy enough to uninstall it if you're not happy.

And yes, I forgot about external players which can be set to different regions as my standalone was chipped to be region free back in antiquity. Just Passing Through's idea might be even easier :)

Hmmm, if your laptop is a Toshiba Satellite then there's a good chance you have one of those pesky Matshita drives that Shiroi Hane was referring to. As a fellow Satellite user, I had a Matshita drive and VLC and other software solutions will not work. Check your device manager and see what drive you've got.

There is a solution for some Matshita drives but it involves a firmware flash.

There's no harm in trying it, I have a Matshita as well, and VLC works with that, after a fashion. When it was a region 2 drive, VLC would play Funimation and ADV discs, but not Bandai, and for Media Blasters, it would chug for about five minutes before starting playback.

I've had Matshita drives which worked too in my old laptops. It's easiest to install it and check :D

Well i actually already had VLC installed for whatever reason, but i don't have any Region 1/A ( Im in the UK so i would need region B/2) DVD's to try to see if it works.

If both of you had Mashita drives and it worked however, i may just get the DVD when i can and then hope it works

You could perhaps (assuming you have some spare money) import a cheap region 1 DVD of some series or movie you want and see if that works first.
If it is successful you could then look into importing whatever region A/1 only title you want.

I have lately been very tempted to import Pinky and the Brain from the United States of America. xD
I really want to watch that cartoon from start to finish someday, and the US DVD release seems the only way to go about it (the only other option is downloading it).

PS: Only thing you'd need to do is get it confirmed the USA release of whatever title you want to test it with is actually region 1 only then. Because some studios tend to keep the non-region 1 codes a secret on region 1 releases.
