Bokurano

Out of all of the anime just beginning in Japan, the only show I'm genuinely desperate to see is Bokurano. This is adapted from a manga by Mohiro Kitoh, who is mostly known for his subversive Pokemon horror "Shadow Star Narutaru". GONZO is handling the animation, while a bunch of Studio Ghibli graduates will be a part of the creative staff, most notably Hiroyuki Morita (director of The Cat Returns).

I don't want to spoil the story for anyone, but having read a fair chunk of the available manga chapters, I can say this is an edgy post-Evangelion mecha show that gratuitously documents our sometimes repulsive, sometimes beautiful struggle through life. No punches are pulled when it comes to the characterization; Kitoh uses the apparent "innocence" of his young protagonists to truly twist the narrative in some shocking directions. The results are nothing less than riveting and I'm really looking forward to seeing how this is transferred to the small screen.

I'm sure I'm not the only one anticipating this show? Click here to see the promo.

I'm sure i've seen the trailer for this, looks interesting. but the whole 3-d mecha thing, yuck, something i am not a huge fan of.

It's not based solely on the mecha, the main focus are the kids in the series themselves, their lives, their individualism, the hardships they've faced past and present.

Yeah i know, that's what's got me interested in the series and from that aspect it looks bloody good. I'll still be watching it.

But i just don't like the whole CGI mecha thing no matter how big or small a part it plays. Call me old fashioned.

I couldn't get into this series, I think its the mech angle, whenever a new mech show appears I just can't seem to be able to enjoy it, one day I will find a show I can get into that has decent robots in it.

Got the RAW, like I expected, first chapter, first episode. I'm really dissapointed with the opening sequence animation, most of it we saw in the trailer. -_-

But apart from that it's a good start and I want to see how far they'll go for episode two~!

I think it's pretty interesting. Like mentioned, I'll probably see this as the "child" of Evangelion. I'm not expecting the same thing, but I'll pobably be comparing it to NGE mentally.

But I'll be looking forward to it. I may need to see more of it though to truely appreciate/analyse it. But it's definately tempting.

I've been searching for the RAW for days. Where can I get it?

It the anime is anything like the manga, it's going to make me cry. This show reminds me of masterpiece; it looks like they took the budget for their fifteenth anniversary piece (which they canceled) and stuck it into Bokurano. I hope it's as godd as the manga... ^^

I've just read over at ANN that the director hates the original manga and will some how save the kids in the end in some undisclosed way rather than having them all end up dead. I was wondering why the anime was becoming less dark when compared to the original manga and now I know why.

I respect Morita's point of view (hell, even I admit that it's depressing at times!) but even then I'm not too keen on changing the feel and story when it's as downright awesome as Bokurano.

On the other hand, he does have the manga-ka's permission...at the end of the day, some changes will have to be made unless Kitoh finishes the manga before the TV series planning is completed. I just wish Morita's decision was for that reason rather than merely disliking the way it was headed.

Sounds like another crap ending by Gonzo. Why couldn't they just leave it be? ;/

Well, since the manga isn't finished we always knew the ending was going to be either the series just stopping unfinished (a la Narutaru, Kare Kano, etc), or they'd make up their own ending. This seems to pretty much confirm the latter. Still, nothing to worry about... Gonzo are known for making good endings, right? Right? :?

GONZO are terrible, there I said it.

I'm sticking with the manga from now on, I'm not going to bother wasting time with the inferior anime, the manga is a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned, and anyone who doesn't like it surely shouldn't be adapting it but oh well.

I'd much rather have the anime having an incomplete ending than have another Gonzo ending. But oh well, if it with Gonzo behind it all, things just weren't meant to last.

Proper music video for the wonderful opening of Bokurano has just been posted over at Ramblings of DarkMirage. Uninstall

The more I listen to this song, the more I love it. And the lyrics are pretty damn awesome too:

Our subconscious grows sharper without us realizing.
When I open my eyes to the contourless presence below my bed,
I am devoid of any feelings,
Except an impulse to destroy everything and anything.
Since I can't even choose the season of my passing...

Uninstall, uninstall.
I was told that I am just one of the countless specks of dust on this planet,
But that is something I cannot yet comprehend.
Uninstall, uninstall.
I have no choice but to pretend that
I am a warrior who knows no fear. Uninstall.

Pretty fitting for Bokurano.
