Blu-Ray Anime

Just thought I'd point out that next Monday has the release of both Tekkonkinreet and Paprika on Blu-ray.

I've been very tempted to buy the DVDs for both of them; but now both are coming out on HD after a very respectable amount of time IMO. I think I'll watch these versions rather than the DVD ones now. In case you didn't know, Both these titles are by Sony Entertainment. In which they must be running out of HD material to release or slowly realizing that anime has a big following with a lot of money in it. Anyhow, Any form of BD anime is good in my books, These two especially just ice the cake.

The previously mentioned Metropolis for BD seems to have disappeared from absolutely everywhere now, which isn't too bad I suppose. I was never planning on getting it.

I haven't seen much like this released on BD so far really, With the exception of some FF movie. Its a step in the right direction for the likes of us.

Wishful thinking but - now if some anime companies like ADV or FUNimation began to back Blu-ray then we would start to see some more excellent titles coming our way. That would be so kickass.

Thoughts?

Good stuff indeed. XD

Except, the market is still quite adjusting to Blu-Ray, and releasing titles in the format would pretty much be a drop in the well, as the market for anime is already qutie niche, AND we're in this dark hole we call the UK, which errrr.. gives these companies even less incentive to do so.

We can hope though.

Anime on Blu-ray/HD-DVD isn't of interest to me at this stage. With no HDTV or Blu-ray/HD-DVD player, I'm actually quite happy with the small amount of anime being released in HD currently.

I have watched a few 720P episodes on my crappy computer. Darker than BLACK looks excellent, although it's only really the colours where I notice the improvement over SD. I really need to get a new computer and monitor without awful backlight bleed in the near future.

Not sure about this at the moment me and a friend at work are both into Home Cinema stuff (£500-£1000 DVD players, £1000-£3000 Amps and Projectors that sort of thing) yet neither of us feel confident enough to to put our money on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD at the moment.

In the Anime market I think Blu-Ray will win out as many anime watchers also game and are more likely to get hold of PS3s than stand alone HD players. Although it will also be dependent on the allegiance of the companies, should a couple of big players for example Funi and ADV go HD-DVD it could make a mess of things with Sony being Blu-Ray. I doubt many companies will do both as most will carry on with DVD until it dies out and that would mean costs for manufacturing three different versions.

One problem, arent blu-ray more expensive? :p

In general I think yes they are, however I am not sure if the supposed increase in quality is worth it. Do they have added extras and stuff beyond the DVD release to tempt people away from DVD like DVD to VHS.

I'm not going to touch UK released Blu-ray discs, as we're in a different region to America and Japan.

There seems to be no concrete evidence that discs are not region coded, and I'm sure the Blu-ray players that are out at the moment aren't region free, although apparently Sony tell producers that it's better not to region code their discs...

A lot of Blu-ray releases from Japan also contain English subtitles now, and some are released simultaneously in Japan and America (i.e Jin-Roh).

Basically, it's way too early to start thinking about buying things on the HD market... it needs a few years to sort itself out first.

I can't see any reason for region coding to be honest... I'd like to know a good reason why it exists. People are going to buy things from their own country if it's released there, and if something's not planned to be released there then why does it matter if someone imports?
I'd like to talk to the 'mastermind' behind region coding...
Region coding is the only negative aspect of Blu-ray, actually.

Apart from all this, I'm massively excited at the prospect of owning anime on an HD format, just it's going to be a long time before that happens... :?

There are a massive amount of things, actually.

It'd be worth your time having a look to be honest, it's pretty interesting stuff.

I have no desire to switch to anything other than DVD just yet, or anytime soon tbh, my DVDs are just fine.
Maybe when the market hots up a bit, though those extras do sound interesting.

Actually from what Ive read recently blu-ray does increase quality, but unless a movie is recorded with a HD camera(like Star Wars ep 3 was) than HD-DVDs that werent are just scamming you out of your money.

Yeah, but not a lot more than the DVD disk. Actually, they don't have more extras than the HD DVD disk, and Blu ray is suppose to carry more than HD DVD.

That's because companies can't be bothered to fill out the disk with more extra features. Henced why people go for HD DVD, technically because they are no different, plus HD DVD is cheaper (Well, according to people. But I see them for the same price in Zavvi O_O)

Don't mind anime going HD or Blu-Ray, if it becomes exclusive to one though there could be a problem. I really don't have the money to buy a new player and pay for such expensive releases. That, and the thought of replacing my DVD collection makes me want to scream...

I think there won't be a clear winner in the HD-Disc market as I think I read somewhere(will have to see if I can find it again) in the US HD-DVD is out selling Blu-Ray but in Europe it is the other way around.

Although sooner or later I will have to make a choice hopefully by then both players will have come down enough to get one of each, or they start doing more hybrid discs. I am still getting over the switch from video to DVD, still got things I need to replace with DVDs.

The Japanese Utawarerumono Blu-ray boxset even has the english dub from ADV on it, the whole show on 4 discs in HD for about £250  buying the single volume DVDs is cheaper never mind a DVD boxset

I can't honestly see thepoint in buying blu ray first, i think I'll just stick with my dvd's until I get a decent hi def tv and my dvd player is made redundant

Oh wow, I wasn't aware that it had the English dub on it! That's awesome news.

Something else that is interesting, and probably the most prominent thing other than the obvious visual/aural improvements that a Blu-ray disc can have... I'm pretty sure it is possible to have many different types of fonts for subtitles, and many different ways they can be implemented.
So maybe we'll see official releases with karaoke and properly styled subtitles, and maybe even credits that aren't hardsubbed onto the video... likewise for signs and the title, etc.

The benefits that HD capable discs can bring to anime really are much greater than that of live-action films, to be honest.

The problem is, anime is already expensive. Only now DVD's are starting to drop in price thanks to HD... I dread to think how much a popular series would cost on Blu-ray/HD-DVD.

DVD's aren't ideal, the grain on dark scenes in anime being very annoying. However, I'd gladly put up with that and 'suffering' from lower quality if it meant finally getting anime on DVD for reasonable prices. It's not like you can't play DVD's on Blu-ray/HD-DVD players.

I don't think it's worth getting into HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.

With some companies only supporting one, and some the other (oh...how convenient!), the only way to get all the movies/series you want is to go for both formats.

But if people want to spend hundreds on two different players, and then £20 for movies you can buy for £3.99 on DVD, just for the sake of barely noticable "better visuals", good for them.
