Before there was Knights of Sidonia, author Tsutomu Nihei wrote numerous other manga stories during his time and one of them was a cyberpunk tale called Blame!. Blame! was made in 1998 for 10 volumes and received a six episode original net animation as well as a live-action adaptation. Now fast forward to November 2015, it's been announced that an animated film adaptation of the original manga will be green-lit.

Blame! follows the story of Killy, a man of few words. He wanders, seemingly endlessly, through a lonely, gargantuan labyrinth of concrete and steel, fighting off cyborgs and other futuristic nightmares, searching only for something called Net Terminal Genes. And he has a very powerful gun, which he uses without hesitation whenever anything resembling danger rears its ugly head. Who is this quiet, violent, determined man and what are these Genes he seeks? The small communities he finds tucked into the crevices of this towering, dystopic ruin hardly give him leads on his treasure, driving him to find larger enclaves of civilization where people can reveal more about the world he lives in and the quarry he seeks. (Plot Synopsis from MAL & Tokyopop)

The announcement was revealed from the final volume of Knights of Sidonia's manga. Image sourced from Reddit.

I remember reading about the Manga (though not reading the actual Manga, I'm way too far behind on Manga as it is). I thought a big part of the appeal was the art and backgrounds (what with there being little dialogue) so it might be interesting to see how they try to translate that.
