UK newspaper The Independent has published an interview on its website with director James Cameron, in which he talks about his involvement in the upcoming adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita manga.<ul class="menu">"Inspired by Japanese graphic novels, he is currently developing Battle Angel, a cyborg thriller set in the 26th century. "It's going to be a mega-budget film shot in 3-D," Cameron enthuses. "It's set in a post-human world in the distant future, and a number of the main characters will be computer-generated. It's a kind of virtual film-making. We're building a whole new motion-capture technology. I'm impatient to get on with using the tools of the future."</ul>The full article can be read here.

It will be fascinating to see how Cameron integrates his infamous 3d filming techniques into the framework of a blockbuster, I'd rather he didn't use a franchise as strong as Alita as the proto-type but I'll reserve judgement until I've seen the finished article.

Somehow I can't help but see this as little more than a showcase for all the shiny new technology. Make everything look as flashy and expensive as possible, while somehow forgetting about the little details such as story...

That being said, it is Cameron, and he does know how to put a movie together. He also seems to have genuine respect for the manga, so here's hoping it doesn't turn out too badly.

.... although I hope it doesn't do too well, either. Can you imagine the frenzy as Hollywood rushes out to turn other manga into live-action movies? :Shudder:

Cameron seems to have respect for anime in general, so if any A-list director is to make a live-action adaptation ofan anime i'd be happy for it to be him.

My sentiments exactly, I'm not too enthused at the prospect of a live version but at least Cameron has some reverrence for the material. I hope it's not watered down in it's translation to the big screen, the anime and manga have some grit, and were very nasty iirc, but that's the crux of Alita, it's a harsh, unforgiving slice of dystopia....lets hope Cameron channels the spirit of the terminator into his vision and not Titanic. ;)
