Attempted rape in anime

I've noticed there seem to be a lot of instances where main (non-evil) characters try to force themselves on female characters and it's treated as not being a big deal afterwards. I've seen this in Outlaw Star with Gene and Melfina, in Rose of Versailles with Andre and Oscar and in Wings of Honneamise with the two main characters in that. Has anyone else noticed this?

There's no doubt, feminism in Japan is a good few years behind the Western world. That said, I think Perfect Blue is a rare example that uses the horror and confusion of rape to utterly disturb the viewer. The attempted rape in Wings of Honneamise is downright depressing.

What happened to the other responses?

Is there a forum rule against misogyny?

I found the other responses were becoming increasingly disgusting and ruining what could be an interesting thread. I've seen spam bots that make more sense than the drivel that passed for responses in here. I wish idiots would remember that we have both male and female users of this board.

Female users? Really?

Anyway to elaborate on my point I think in some circumstances such a scene might actually have a purpose. In Outlaw Star the fact that Melfina is a bionoid partly explains Gene's actions and her lack of a more angry response. It tells us how she views herself plus how Gene views her especially within the context of what he says to her in the scene. In Wings of Honneamise though it makes no sense at all and doesn't feel consistant. It feels more like the makers just wanted to have a nude scene in the film so they decided to have it this way. I almost fell down when the girl said it was my fault for smiling at you.

I completely agree with your assesment of the Gene/Melfina scene.
And dont forget to factor in that Gene was very drunk and considering the possibility of dying the next day in a duel.
This is actually one of my fave episodes.

Well, I haven't seen any of the series you mention, but I can't think of an example of it happening so I guess it's not common in any case.

I think Perfect Blue is one of the few instances I've seen so far that has seen rape dealt with as a realistic and serious issue and something that can't just be brushed off so lightly and forgotten about in the next scene. It seems like Kon, in the scene where Mima is just acting being raped, is trying to capture the confusion, the disgust and the detatchment of what it might be like. I could be wrong about that and it could mean something else that I missed but when I saw it from that point it was an extremely effective piece of cinema.

I've only ever seen the UK version of Wings of Honneamise in which the dodgy scene was cut by Manga so it could be aimed at a wider audience. (only a PG rating)

Can't say I missed it being gone. :p

Any anime with attempted Rape, I just abandon the anime series all together. Don't know why, I should be told off for abandoning a series with rape ordeal, when I should look further into it.

But for some reason, it just put me off the series all together.

I saw an anime a while a go about a girl who becomes a guys servant in a posh school he basically assaults her alot and she can't leave or else she is kicked out of school I barely made it through one episode,

While i've not noticed it in anime from what l've seen in manga it's often shown as being either half hearted, the recourse of the desperate, or those unable to show love any other way (or a cobination of the above). This makes it easier to brush under the carpet. Also much like the physical damage in anime, emotional damage heals faster than in real life (unless it's the focus of the show).
From what l've noticed in real life some women/girls are able to shrug thier shoulders and say 'no harm done' while others will practically call the police if you put your hand on their knee.

Haha - GAINAX's He Is My Master no doubt! It's not a bad anime, and certianly doesn't include anything even close to rape. It's just very, very light-hearted and typically filled to the brim with fanservice (maids, maids, maids) as per the norm from GAINAX.

Yer ive watched that anime, Its just funny in some cases. Although when watching it i did think that japan didnt care as much about that kind of thing as the rest of the world. If that kind of thing was aired in england on a kids channel im sure it would get shut down >.<

i think u guys keep forgetting...

ITS ONLY ANIME! and the japanese sexual preferences are a little on the bizarre side and im not bein simple minded(come on this is the country that brought us tenticle rape).

no offense but u guys really gotta stop taking it so seriously and just take it for wat it is light entertainment which from time to time is f**ked up :/

It's nothing do with how lecherous the Japanese are.

The origin of the tentacle sex is from the censorship laws; about how they were originally supposed to only censor human genitals.

So eventually some smart guy figured tentacles were okay, as a kind of loophole to the law. 0.0;

The whole tentacle things goes a bit further back than that I think. There are old Japanese porno drawings that go right back to the early 1800s, which includes the odd tentacle piece. (it's probably wrong to call it porno, as older stuff if normally called cultural history or something like that...)

While I agree that the current censorship means that creators use this kind of material more frequently than in that past, the ideas they use have been around for a while.

Meh, I'm just splitting hairs anyhoo...
