Memories of Matsuko is an absolutely amazing movie. Big recommendation to anyone going.

Glad to see they actually have one of Kurosawa's non-samurai movies (Drunken Angel). Most people seem to just stick to his samurai movies, ignoring his contemporary films (though Drunken Angel wouldn't be one of my faves).

Screw you London, and all the bloody... stuff you get.
As much as the capital remains the centre of virtually everything, its inhabitants most certainly pay a premium for its luxuries. Barbican film prices remain off-putting to many.

Egad! With such a sum of currency I was able to sustain myself for a whole week! (The Crossharbour ASDA was quite useful for living within such constraints, I found.)

£8.50 isn't expensive. How much does one wish to pay for the left-field cinema experience these days?
Personally, I think at least two quid less than that would be fair. When I can actually purchase a Blu-ray Disc (or two DVDs) for the price of a cinema ticket, there's something terribly wrong there. It's like having a car park where you can buy a two hour ticket for the same price as a permit that never runs out. The only difference being that the two hour spaces are bigger.

I'm definitely going for some of these, Rashomon & Nana for sure, and I need to choose the other's I want to see... Anyway, I'm entitled to discounted tickets if anyone want to tag along.
Kaede?

£8.50 to go and see some random film at any random cinema, I can see your point. £8.50 in this specific instance, perfectly fair imo.

The concept of comparing a rarely found luxury, such as going to see some of these films at the cinema, with shopping in ASDA is so far beyond sanity that it even stands out from Zin's usual nutcase comments.

Hey, Chaos. Thanks but I'll be seeing Rashamon with my friends and I've gotta email everyone and sort it all out so I'll have to pass. Would be good to see you there though.

I really, really don't think £8.50 is too much to ask for more than an hour and a half's entertainment. If the cinema has great seating, picture quality and a good sound system then I think it's justified. My problem is the ridiculous cost of the treats. I NEED MY TREATS when watching a film at the cinema. I have to admit I always sneak in a can of delicious Cherry Coke.

Just for a random film at a random cinema? It's not so much that it's outright too much on its own (I will also happily "overpay" for something if I personally think it's worth it), it's just that you have to be able to see the argument for why it's not exactly "value" or you've lost all sense of the real world (and, tbh, the average price of a cinema ticket).

As Maes says, the price is not that much. Some of these films will never see a DVD release in the UK and most will have probably only a single screening around here, so I think that the value is right. Foreign cinema is usually considered arthouse, so doens't attract the masses to see them and justify cheaper prices. Also, with a membership I think you can get to see them for 6 quid each.

I'm still entitled to discounted tikets, even for the ones I won't be seeing, so let me know if it interests you.

Didn't check that, but I'm hoping they use cinema 1 for this, as it's the nicest screen they have. The other screens are tiny. Still, better than nothing.
They had a vending machine in the Barbican close to cinema 2, where you could get treats with the usual prices. The stall they have close to the cinema is always overpriced. The bar at cinema 1 is not that bad though.

The information I copy and pasted from the Barbican site states that all the Aspects of Japanese Cinema films will be shown on screen 1.

Sure thing, see you there.

Indeed, if only I've paid more attention to it before.

I've just got my tickets. A bit gutted that Kamikaze girls is already sold out :(
Also, on the night of Kamikaze girls they will have a cosplay extravaganza http://www.barbican.org.uk/artgallery/e ... son_280910
