A brand new (3+ minutes) trailer for Appleseed Ex Machina has been published online and can be streamed over at YouTube. This CG-animated movie is a follow-up to the popular 2004 Appleseed film and interestingly, is being produced by famous Hollywood & Hong Kong film maker John Woo.
Many of the same people working on the Appleseed franchise are also contributing to the recently licensed Vexille, the trailer of which you can also stream at YouTube. Both movies are notable for utilizing 3D CG animation techniques to animate characters and perhaps offer an early glimpse into what the future may hold for Japanese animation.

The graphics on both of them are certainly amazing. Although I don't think this is the future for anime as not everyone would want to see all anime in this full 3D kind of thing on all anime. It certainly shows how animation has changed since the first 3DCG Appleseed anime, for this style of animation.

With the way 2D US animation has fallen by the way side in light of the 3D-CG revolution started by Pixar, I wouldn't be surprised to see this eventually happen in Japan too, and the only reason it hasn't happened already is because of the production costs. I really hope it doesn't go this way since I love the 2D style - I mean imagine watching Cowboy Bebop all 3D CG'ed up. Yuck!

i would switch back to pokemon cards if that ever, ever happened.

Stylised 2D images simply hold a charm that much of CG of animation doesn't have. While I don't mind CGI animation, I'd like to believe there'll always be a place for the drawn image.
