Antique Bakery

Just thought I would start a thread about this series. Recently read the 4 volumes and I was blown away by how good it was.

It's about four guys who work at a bakery, their lives and the lives of their customers. It has a very interesting art style, backgrounds are often empty or left white and it is a very funny series. But there's a very good detective story which runs all the way through. In the final volume, where bits and peices are tied up, I swear I had a Usual Suspects style moment.

You now... it's that feeling where you just know you've read something good. Nice to know there is still manga out there that can make me feel that way.

Just wandering if others have read the series and more importantly, what did you think?

Aside from anything, it's making me want more cake!

Heh, literally just ordered the first volume of this manga from Amazon.co.uk (mainly because it was so cheap). Amazon.co.uk have it listed as a "yaoi" though, which I'm guessing is just wrong, right? It's probably just shoenen-ai or something? In any case, looking forward to it! ^_^

CitizenGeek,

Antique Bakery is a bit of a strange one when it comes to categories, it doesn't really fit into either category to be honest. They do look at gay relationships, a bit of kissing, things are hinted at, but that's about it. But in the context of the storyline, this is more background stuff. It's more of a comedy with some drama thrown in. It is very cleverly written though- I won't reveal more than that...!

I hope you enjoy reading it.

I loved Antique Bakery, i read it ages ago now. I'm glad more people are discovering it. I bought it hoping for a good yaoi story, but i wasn't really disappointed that there wasn't much yaoi to be seen because it's a good story, and it has some great characters that really bring it together. I'm not sure i could pick a favourite character if i wanted to because they all have interesting personalities, and i think thats what makes the story.

When i was reading Antique Bakery i got really obsessed with patisseries, and trying to find places that sold great cakes (theres nowhere in Cornwall!!!). And it brought me a new dream for a while, to become a patisserie chef, and open my own patisserie...actually i still wouldn't mind doing this, lol

Actually, since reading it I've been thinking "I would love to eat those cakes." So I'm planning to write a list of interesting cake/pattisserie shops and eat my way around London. So, if anyone reading this knows of a good cake shop do let me know.

What was really refreshing about the customers in Antique Bakery is no-one mentions anything about diets and watching your weight. Which is a good thing as their cakes look totally moor-ish!

My favourite character, if I had to choose, would be Eiji. But really, I love them all - it was such a fun story to read.

I finally got this in the post yesterday! Very impressive release from DMP. Nice cover, larger-than-usual size and that nice gimmick on the cover (that strawberry that, when scratched, smells like a strawberry).

Looking forward to getting stuck in later! ^_^

I finished reading the first volume of Antique Bakery last night! I thought it was really, really great - I've already got vols. 2 and 3 on order! I really like all the main characters, they've all got interesting backstories and stuff! Yoshinaga's art is very pronounced and I really enjoy it! In fact, I'm thinking of checking out some more of her work: Any idea on some good Yoshinaga work?

I think it's unfair that Antique Bakery has been lumped in with the shoenen-ai/yaoi category!

Hi there CitizenGeek

There are certainly some interesting backstories in 2 and 3 but I won't say more than that! You're right about her art work. What really surprised me were the empty backgrounds - normally mangaka's fill in the frames and the way she draws makes the characters and the stories they tell more interesting. I know what you mean about the category problem - I think that alone will put off some readers but it is by far one of the most cleverest stories I have read.

The other series she is writing is 'Flower of Life' where there are 3 volumes. I haven't read this but I have been told it's good.

Also, looking in the latest copy of Shojo Beat (of all places!) there's an advert which says her newest manga 'Garden Dreams' will be go on sale October 24 in the States, so it looks like there will be more manga to enjoy!

Finished reading volume 2 a while ago. I think I understand the shounen-ai rep that this manga has a little better now, what with the story involving Ono and Chikage. Really enjoying it, can't wait for volumes 3 and 4 to get here in the post!
