* = In addition to the above, London's Barbican cinema will be hosting a one-off screening of 2001's big budget anime movie Metropolis. Based on a manga by the influential Osamu Tezuka and adapted for animation by Akira director Katsuhiro Otomo, the retro-looking science fiction flick will be introduced by Helen McCarthy, co-author of the "Anime Encyclopedia".

Awesome-worthy, and just after my exams!

I need to find out if these are going to be English dubbed or with subtitles, though.

Seeing these on the big-screen will be incredible <3.

More than definately going to see Metropolis and the Barbican.

I've already booked the ticket (and time off work!) for 5cm...I'm looking forward to Shinkai doing the presentation/Q&A too. The rest I've seen already but for those of you who haven't, they're well worth catching on the big screen if you can make it. :)

I just received an e-mail from BFI regarding how these films will be presented:

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Death Note will be screened in English. The other films in the Anime season will have English subtitles. The majority of films which we screen at the BFI Southbank are in the original language. These films will have EST listed next to them.

Maybe I didn't look properly to know that EST meant original language, but whatever - I'm going to try and get as many of these booked as I can... You don't get many chances to see anime at the cinema, and on a personal note - I can be free of worry about video quality and presentation aspects, yay!

Just got back... *looks at his autographed artbooks and DVD's* I had to hold my horses not to act too fanboy-ish ^_^

on another note, when I asked him to sign and showed my company id card, he saw my japanese name and asked me if I'm japanese and started talking to me, but I've kept saying "hai, hai"=D

It was really great and the movie is beautiful.
I could not find Martin though... there were several skinny shoulder lenght hair guy there... :/

I'm going tomorrow for the girl who leapt through time.

Sounds great. I was too busy with work to go (and I've already seen it >_<).

Want to see Tokikake badly but I think it was going to be the English version? Hopefully a blu-ray will find its way to my hands in the near future, enjoy.

Got my copy of voices signed by him :) They ran out of the art books very quickly :(
Back tomorrow for the girl who leapt through time.
I've got mine before the movie started. I've already have a voice, but I didn't had the place... Gonna put my copy of voice for selling soon =)

I went to see 5cm per second, and Paprika. Such a shame the question and answer session took so long that Paprika was going to start like 5 minutes after it, so I couldn't get anything signed - didn't have £25 for the artbook anyway so I'd have got the manga signed. But oh my god, Satoshi Kon is such a legend, I was on such a high last night after it was finished. Everything about Paprika is absolutely perfect, everyone must see it right away : ). As for 5cm per second, it was great, but there was this guy in front who blocked out the bottom left hand side of the screen, so I couldn't see the subtitles sometimes, but overall it was very enjoyable - once it got to part two of the story though, I didn't know what was going on... I'll have to see it again sometime.

I'd like to keep writing about how awesome Paprika is, but it'd take many pages and involve lots of nonsensical words.

As for the actual quality of the screening - I'm going to contact the BFI and see where the hell they got the film reel from - it was not as shakey as other films I've seen (Blockbuster films), but it kept going in and out of focus and had a constant bombardment of film artifacts (can't find a specific technical term), but basically it looked like the entire film reel had been dragged backwards through a bed of pins then had dirt and mud dropped on it (in chunks). Not that I'd let it impact enjoyment of such a marvelous film, I put it to the back of my mind - it was just very noticable, and I hope it isn't the same with Appleseed Ex Machina and Vexille - which I'm also going to see.

I don't even know if 5cm per second was in fact projected from a film reel, it had the ADV logo come up and was free of any kind of movement/film artifacts, but the quality was absolutely superb, way above DVD standard, but the subtitles were bright yellow. So I assume they played it from the master tape [or any of these "SD and HD - VHS(PAL/NTSC/SECAM/), DVD, Beta SP, Digibeta, Quvis cinema player
] ( that ADV had (the ADV man was there with a friend), I didn't notice any video artifacts what-so-ever, so I'd assume it was the Digibeta master tape, I haven't a clue what frame rate it was played at though. Putting that aside, it was very enjoyable so I'm not complaining.

Just anyone who hasn't already seen it - GO BUY PAPRIKA!!!

I wonder how many years it'll be until the next Satoshi Kon movie. (And I might go all out to try and get a Blu-ray player, just to see Paprika in HD).

I think 5cm was from a digital source. The girl who leapt through time was dusty and scratched, I think anime film reels do the rounds quite a few times.

As for the girl who leapt through time, it has to be the best anime film I've seen in a LONG time. I can't wait to get it on DVD and watch it again.

If the guy in front of you were always moving and was oriental, than it should have been me, as I couldn't read as well and had to keep moving until I found a way to see the sub's. I'm glad I don't need them all the time though.

"The girl who leapt...." is really, really awesome. A great story, characters you care about and pudding. ;D

In general, I'm really impressed with BFI's selection. If only there were no tall guys in front of me.... I'm seriously considering Vexille and appleseed...

Being tall means I can see over all your heads ;) But I tend to slouch down in the seats.

Pity about the people coming in 20-30 mins late...... GRRR!

Certainly good going by the BFI, just wish they'd do it more often. The last one was 3 years ago and my little sis saw Kiki's delivery service there.
