Anime screening night

Hi! I'm hoping to start an anime screening night in my local area. Has anyone done this before and knows the general rules/legal issues with screening anime to an audience?

Plenty of universities and colleges run screening-based anime clubs that, to my knowledge, have never been disputed, but I wouldn't like to say what the exact legality of the situation is. I'm assuming you're not intending to run it in an institution like that, but it might be worth finding out if there is anything along those lines near you and contacting them to see if they'd have been given any official guidelines on the matter.

A quick look over the net found me this on Wikipedia

Showing a DVD or video to a group of people outside of the home is legally regarded as a public showing, and is therefore in breach of copyright for DVDs/videos that have been purchased or hired for domestic use. To organise a group screening, permission from the copyright owner of the title in question will need to be obtained. Obtaining such rights clearances can be a complex procedure.

The copyright info when a disc loads always made it sound like you cannot have a showing where random people can walk in off the street and also where those that have been invited are charged a fee. That'd mean a club would be fine as they are not charged an entry fee and they are not the general public, though the above Wikipedia entry would suggest that they would still be considered the general public.

If I were an Anime company I'd let the club thing slide as crushing a fan club for what your selling is never going to be good for business.

If you talk to MVM, Anime Limited and the like (I don't think you'll have much success contacting Manga) they might be able to help you out. I know a few companies in the US supported clubs back in the day.
