Anime films available to download legally?

According to Animetion on the 3rd August The Times newspaper reported that the British Internet Broadcasting company (BiBc), is currently discussing with Optimum Releasing, the possibility of legal film downloads to your PC. This would be the first ever way of downloading mainstream films to your PC for half the cost of a DvD.

Its worth baring in mind that Optimum Releasing's "Optimum Asia" label has several anime films in its library such as Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and more recently BareFoot Gen. So we could see anime films available for download eventually.

It is however unlikely this service will begin for at least 6 months.

Don't think I'd bother! If they mean 1/2 the price of an average UK DVD in the high street, that'd mean around £10 to download something :( It's not because I wouldn't want to pay the cost, it's because I'd rather pay the extra and buy the DVD. As I've said before, the majority of people who download anime, rarely buy DVDs and I can't see them wanting to pay that kind of money for one programme!!

If it was like payng a monthly fee to get all they're movies I might do it but paying per Movie doesnt sound too great.

This is a bit of a dumb idea, I mean if I was willing to shell out in the first place then Id just buy it normal retail price, Id hate to buy something and just have it on my pc, I much prefer to have the box!

I totally agree with you here Ramen89, though bare in mind "half the cost of a DVD" is just what the source said, seeing as the whole thing isnt finalised it may well be less than, that. Personally I could never be bothered to download something I wanted on DvD on my PC...as...well I want the actual DvD.

I have to agree that the scheme doesn't hold much appeal for me either- I'm already paying a monthly fee for rentals so if I want to check out a title I might as well go that way, and when I really want something to keep, I'd rather have the DVD.

I think they mean that you download it and can burn it to DVD.

Personally, if the price was significantly cheaper than I could buy the discs online (and I'm talking in the region of £5-7 per volume depending on the anime), then I could see myself going for something like that. After that though, I prefer the official DVD, which just plain looks better and has the extras I want.

That pre-supposes of course, that the download will just be of the episodes / movie, and none of the rest of the stuff that typically comes on the DVD.

In any case, I don't necessarily have an aversion to downloading and burning my own collection and keeping it in a carry case somewhere. It might be a good way for me to increase my collection with titles that I'm interested in but don't want to pay so much to collect. Plus it could also be a good way to sample a series before buying.

I think there's potential in this model, but there need to be more details.

Their doing that? Wow, now thats something I'd consider doing, seeing as my cinema sucks.

Yeah, it is often a lot more convenient to watch at home. You don't get all the kids ruining your viewing experience. Although in the end I'd probably still go to see it in the cinema, since despite the shortcomings, it's still a great 'first time' experience.

Interesting. I must admit that I have a strange obsession with storing everything on DVDs in cases alphabetically. However, for mainstream films, the idea of downloading at home sounds better than having to go out to the cinema; I can't think of too many films that have to be seen on the large screen.

On the note of cinemas, my hunt for Drawing Restraint 9 shall begin soon. Cinemas around me don't tend to bother with arthouse films or, sadly, anime like Spirited Away, so for more obscure films the downloading would be quite useful indeed.

I wouldn't be too keen to download a film that I could pick up on DVD for a few extra quid, not to mention the fact I own a large chunk of Optimum's back catalogue (anime and otherwise) anyway.

I wouldn't bother with this either, waste of money, it would be useless on my computer, if i'm going to buy something i would much prefer the nice case to stack up all my others
