At the American anime convention Anime Expo, ADV films today announced that they had acquired the license for the original Macross TV series. The licence for the series recently expired from its previous owners, and now ADV have it, they intend to produce a dub (the older release of Macross was subtitled only).

Well, i guess i wait for the ADV release then. Sweetness.

Btw, not really UK news, but Eva will be airing on the US Cartoon Network, in its entirety.

Hell must of froze over.

A few months ago, I'm sure I was reading that ADV's "vintage" releases weren't selling and in some cases, shelved, but with them licensing not only Shadow Skill but the even older Macross, this is somewhat moot. Good luck to them though, I'm really up for checking out Macross.

ADV do seem to be cutting back on new acquisitions though, this time last year they announced a big list of new titles, some of which still haven't seen the light of day (KURAU: Phantom Memory, Tactics etc).

Just one thing if you dont watech dubs Harmony Gold are still selling the whole of the AnimEigo version for $125 on Robotech.com and it will most likley be cheaper and better quality.

You see when they got the rights AE spend a fortune on remastering Macross and later when ADV where working on the remaster from Robotech they asked AE for a copy of the remastered Macross to use for the Macross Saga but given how much AE like ADV they refeused leading ADV to remaster it themself however there version is vastly inferioir to the AE version and is most likely what they will be using for there upcoming Macross release because as AE done the remaster themself they dont have to hand it over to Harmoney Gold when there distro rights expired so ADV still wont have access to it.

If anyone is interested in the "state" of the US anime industry, take a look at this comparision chart...

We all knew the industry was in recession but these are the facts. At last year's Expo, ADV announced 16 new licenses (including two which have since been unlicensed) - this year, they announced 1! Personally, I think it's good that these companies have started doing things realistically again, though this obviously isn't good news for fans of "niche" series.

Wow. It's quite shocking the speed and extent of change happening at ADV, more so than any other major anime distributor. Then again they've been the major culprit over licensing too much.

Guess US fans will have a tough time getting used to it. *Should the likes of ADV still be producing dubs as standard  ?

Anyhow - it'll be interesting how this affects ADV Uk in the future - greater reliance on non-ADV titles and delving into the back catalogues.

Last year ADV really did license a bucket load of rubbish, Stuff like "Diamond Dust Drops" and the like I don't even know a single thing about. They only have themselves to blame for this.

I think producing dubs as standard will always be something the majority of major anime companies do, as it makes the shows accesible to more people in some respects, therefore making more sales. I'm not sure which is the most popular subs or dubs , but I'd say subs are probably more popular among fan's who follow anime , and dubs more among the casual buyer. The anime companies need to attract casual buyers too. Personally as a big dub fan I do think my enjoyment of anime would be significantly hampered if a studio went sub only, but I can't see that occouring.

ADV seem to be in the frame of mind of re-releasing just now in slimpak form etc.. , and personally I don't see this as a bad thing. Some companies need to slow down a lot.

Dubs are the more popular overall.*

Sub only shows never sell as well as shows with a choice, simple as that.

* thats based on VHS sales, where dub tapes sold up 25X more than sub tapes

Yes but anime fandom has changed alot since then now alot of people watch fansubs and have gotten to appericate the japanese audio more and you also have to remember the great amjority of VHS releases where dub only so they where always going to greatly outsell subbed tapes
