For a while now, Sony have been running the anime streaming service Animax, which lets anime fans in the United Kingdom enjoy legal streaming of both new and catalogue anime titles, including Bleach, Mardock Scramble and Terror in Resonance. For a while now, the Animax service has been able to be viewed on PCs via their website, as well as an application on the PlayStation 3 console.

Today, Animax have announced that the service is now available on Sony's latest console, the PlayStation 4 and a beta version of the application can now be downloaded from the PlayStation Store for free (although a monthly premium membership is needed to view the majority of Animax's catalogue).

Do you own a PlayStation 4? If so, will you be using it to watch Animax?

While I guess it's okay to have this app on PS4, it's not okay to block off Crunchyroll (which I assume Animax is the reason for lack of UK availability*).

*I am aware that you can get a US account and download Crunchyroll from there.

If I owned a PS4, I'm not sure I could justify a sub on top of the PlayStation+ fee.

Question: Would it actually be possible to use this app if you have a paid subscription but not a PlayStation+ membership? Because if not, then considering that you're already paying Sony for one service, I think they should include an optional free Animax premium membership with every PS+ membership.

Why would you need a PlayStation+ subscription? I have the (unused) Animax and (often used) CR apps on PS3 without PS+ on my account.

Anyway, why are they putting all this effort into spreading their service to more platforms and not into making their service suck less?

I don't mind paying for them, but I want them to be worthwhile if they have to exist in the first place.

To use the online services of the PlayStation 4 (such as online play), you need a PlayStation+ subscription, if I remember correctly. Whereas with the PlayStation 3, one isn't needed.
