To be honest you can't say you like anime unless you like Akira.

Its like... what caused the anime boom in the 90's, and the symbolism in the movie just makes it one of the best, if not the best movie made.

Not to mention it was like the first animated movie that didn't cut corners on the animation

/Akira appraisal :D

Your wrong I love anime and I dont like Akira (Just proved your ass wrong 8) )

Just out of curiosity, why dont you like Akira?

Probably the fact that I hated most parts of it. I hated the end and I didnt like the begining. The part that I did like was when they where fighting on there bikes. After that I totaly lost intrest

It's a very good film, but I always prefered the manga because it explained what was going on a lot better. :D

Havn't read it for ages, must get around to buying a copy one of these days, and the film too.

Not that I've read the manga, but didn't it run for a really long time? o_O

'Anime' is too broad a medium to say that. Many housewives in Japan (and perhaps elsewhere) could list a great wealth of anime they've loved, and they'd be very different from stuff that falls in the target demographic of films like Akira.

Akira may have raised the profile of Anime in the west, but equally, it put the medium into a decade long rut of the same kind of thing being released. Manga entertainment aren't a bright company or a very rich company. It took companies like ADV and MVM and more intelligent releases than Akira (which is a pretentious mess if I ever saw one) to make Anime half of what it is today.

But this is an Image & Screen-cap show off board, and for what it's worth, Akira is worth watching for its brilliant art. On that level it's enjoyable, but the rest is laughable.
