News of ADV Films financial strife continues to twist and turn in the US with recent reports that they have further "<a href="http://www.animenation.net/blog/2008/07/11/adv-discontinues-additional-titles/">discontinued</a>" their anime DVD releases of Makoto Shinkai's highly rated <strong><em>Five Centimeters Per Second</em></strong> and the sci-fi action series <em><strong>Innocent Venus</strong></em>. This follows on from them losing dozens of their anime series to Funimation <a href="http://www.animeuknews.net/news/1702/funimation-cherry-pick-releases-from-geneon-usa-adv-films">earlier in the month</a>.

ADV had also included <em>Best Student Council </em>and <em>Robotech </em>in the above cull, but <a href="http://www.animenation.net/blog/2008/07/14/adv-revives-two-titles/">later reinstated</a> those releases, bringing into question whether or not the above (still discontinued) anime, like Five Centimeters Per Second, might still have a future with ADV in the US market after all? Unfortunately, it remains to be seen how (if at all) this latest upheaval effects the status of ADV Films' DVD releases in the UK.

Why can't they lose their manga to other companies as well? I never thought I'd be hoping an anime companies downfall would speed up.

They already lost Aria.

My guess is that no one else wants to pick up their manga or wants to spend the time trying to fight for the license. I don't know.

Time to start singing "na na na na, na na na na, ADV, Goodbye" yet?

it was looking so good for them this time last year too.

Bloody Americans and their Recession

I'm surprised about 5cm considering it's arguably one of their best titles, not to mention a fairly recent one.

It is exactly because it is a fairly recent one that they lost it, probably. With the backing from Sojitz falling through they have lost a lot of the capital they made those acquistions with and without that have had to let them go. I wouldn't say it is a case of them wanting to let these titles go as much as not being able to keep them.

I have to say I'm gutted that 5cm is delayed yet again - it was one of the few upcoming ADV titles that I was actually looking forward to.

On the plus side it gives me time to save up for a Blu-ray player and HD set!

:'(
Hope someone else picks their good licenses and have some sense. Anime might not be the most lucrative business in the world, but I doubt it's in such a bad shape a company would go down like that.

Seems like ADV really is a sinking ship now. Innocent Venus won't be missed too badly, but considering Five Centimeters Per Second's status it would suggest they really are desperate.

Innocent Venus isn't much to be missed. It seemed promising with the cool CG but in the end it was just an excuse to fight with CG mecha. The story went out the window at the end of the second volume... about the same point the story of 'This Ugly Yet Beautiful World' got really interesting.

All this news about ADV going down hasd put me (and probebly other people) off buying welcome to the NHK volume 1 in august......until i have guarentee that all volumes will come out i aint buying it.

Now me and others not spending money on it makes ADV sink faster.

I am dissapointed about Shinkai's Five centimetres per second even though I've heard nothing about the film at all. I've liked all his works so far. But to be honest I'm not gonna miss ADV much, yea they released some good stuff, they released some bad stuff (more in my opinion) but in the end there's many other companies and they've all in my experience produced better anime. If the stuff ADV is releasing really is good, the other companies will try to get the licences and if ADV really is that desperate as they sink faster. They'll sell the licences to cut their losses.

It is a bit annoying that they'll take some good licences with them though. Two of my favourite shows; Evangelion and Full Metal Panic; belong to ADV and it's a little sad that they'll be leaving UK shelves with the company. Hopefully all the worthwhile stuff will be salvaged by someone else.

That said, this could mean that 'FMP:The Second Raid' will finally get an R2 release.

Hope i manage to pick up Evangelion before it all goes tits up.
Though i'm annoyed about 5CM aswell. Still, gotta get the US version before its a rarity.

Thankfully I have a friend who imported 5cm, and so have watched it. I can say it wiould be an absolute tragedy if this film doesn't see the light of day in region 2 format. If ADV have reached the point where they have to drop such an anticipated title, I wonder how much longer they have......

Oh, and Yotsuba too. If that vanishes into thin air, I might be a little cross.

ADV would have survived if they got Gurren Lagann, image the money the new age Evangelion would've raked in, holycrap.
