'Welcome to the NHK': Despite being one of my favourite animes it suffers from some serious breakdowns in the animation department, something which I always thought was a shame given the quality of the storytelling.

I've seen the first episode, love the bleak atmosphere it establishes. The whole thing of showing without telling is strangely compelling too. When I'm not broke I'll have to nab the boxset.

Agreement here, I thought the 2nd Patlabor film was a vast improvement on the first. The animation is of a higher standard, the shift of focus onto Gotoh is a welcome one and the plot is more complex and intriguing. I know a lot of people hate it for similar reasons to most of Oshii's work...

Page 18: Meet the parents..

I'll agree that some of the plot twists at the end felt kind of rushed (Takizawa as King of Japan?!), still I did love the final scene where the missiles were being shot down, at least on a visual level it was a striking moment. I also liked how the missing NEETS tied into the story aswell...

Eden of the East - 7/10 Despite the tremedous amount of potential the series held in the first few episodes it did fall rather flat around the midsection. The show seemed to be suffering from an identity crisis where it couldn't decide whether to be slice of life romance or a hi-tech...

Brilliant work on the face there, the only thing I'd say needs fixing are legs in the last one - they look a tad too thick, although perhaps that's intentional stylising. Aside from that, bring on the colour!

Fair point. As you stated, Gungrave is an example of a bad opening episode leading into a great series. It doesn't help when an anime starts on the wrong foot, but judging something like 26 episodes based on one alone seems fairly rash. So long as there is a glimmer of something interesting or...

Exactly. Rather than going for cheap hooks in the first episode like excessively dark foreshadowing or a fight where half the series budget is blown in 30 seconds, it opts for steady development. Something which pays off all the more as the story progresses.
