I suspect it would take some deep pockets but it doesn't look like anyone has picked up the UK rights to the Studio Ghibli catalogue since they left Studio Canal and it appears that the new Miyazaki doesn't have a distributor yet either. I'd pay good money for proper extras-filled...

The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron will get its UK premiere as part of the London Film Festival Interestingly, the screening is credited to the sales agent Goodfellas which would seem to suggest that the Ghibli catalog is still without a distributor in the UK (Studio Canal's rights expired a...

What's the deal with the other Rebuild films? Is a complete box set off the cards? -- G Gundam is another Gundam that I'm not personally interested in, but it's great that there seems to be some regularity with the releases now. Hopefully War in the Pocket and the Trilogy UHDs aren't too far away.

I don't think there's much to lament; we're in a golden age for physical media and it's all the better for the fact that the big studios can't be bothered to release things themselves and are increasingly licensing them out to labels that have a passion for what they're doing.

I wouldn't take a decision regarding physical media releases from a company that owns a streaming service and is therefore pretty invested in forcing you to use it as a barometer for the marketplace as a whole.

Overseas The Discotek Media Thread (plus AnimEigo)

Discotek do like to hype up every set of announcements as something massive when, let's face it, they're almost always routine. I can't see anything particularly exciting in this one. I'm thankful that they're dipping their toes into Mamoru Oshii with Nihon Nights, as that sub-label felt like...

I don't know why AL (or any other anime label, to my knowledge) have never used Fidelity in Motion to author their releases. They're widely considered the best in the business and, considering their clientele is mostly boutique labels, I doubt their asking price is excessively high. They should...

I'm cautiously optimistic for Otakon, as if they have Puss n Boots then they surely - surely - have The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon and Hakujaden? If they've licenced the only one of the recent Toei Doga restorations I have no interest in then I'll take it as a personal slight :p...

Looking forward to NieA_7. I've never seen it before but I'm a big fan of ABe's work with Haibane Renmei and Serial Experiments Lain so I've been meaning to get round to it for a long time. It would be great if MVM could get any of the materials from the Japanese BD release to do their own CE:

I'll obviously be getting it (especially at that bargain price) but it's disappointing that Gunbuster doesn't seem to include any of the extras from the stacked decade-old Japanese release (a near-2 hour long making of and 'Science Lessons' omake seem like the biggest misses). Alas.... Now that...

It seems unlikely that AL will get Witch from Mercury but fingers crossed. I think it's terrific; probably the best time that I've had with a Gundam series since Turn A. -- I'm looking forward to hearing more about the 4K UHD trilogy set. Hopefully there'll be some extras added over the...

    Your anime viewing journal

I certainly liked Suzume better on first viewing than I did Shinkai's previous effort, Weathering with You, which I felt stretched his tropes to the point of self-parody without doing anything to move them forward. Suzume is a bit more interesting in the context of Shinkai's career, nodding...
