Now that you mention it, I think the Urusei Yatsura remake was the same way, although I can’t say I particularly missed it.

MaXXXine (2024) The third instalment of Ti West‘s ‘X’ series sees an ambitious adult star reach the cusp of breaking into mainstream movies, only for her dark past to start catching up with her, all while a leather-clad killer roams the streets in 1985 Los Angeles. With its pitch perfect...

Ah, I see - that’s interesting, the show did remind me a bit of How Heavy Are the Dumbells You Lift? but without the fitness advice, so it kind of makes sense that there was a component like that to it as well.

Kaiju No. 8 ep12 [end] Wasn’t quite as engaged with this one overall as I would have hoped (would have appreciated a stronger sense of what was at stake, given that the civilian population never seems to be in much actual danger), but a solid and well made action series nonetheless. Urusei...

Have now racked up about four hours trying to beat the boss for the current event in Arknights. Pain.

Worth mentioning as well that, while I think it settles down after a few episodes, the comic timing in the new version isn’t quite as good as the original. I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker, but the original does seem able to land the gags a little more smoothly.

Christiane F. (1981) A milestone of German cinema, adapted from a series of real-life interviews with a young girl who drifted into the world of addiction and vice centred on Berlin’s notorious Bahnhof Zoo transit hub in the mid 1970s. Its verite-style approach to the material lends it a...

Yeah, I get the impression that BGC 2040 was an early anime experience for a lot of people and I wouldn’t want to take away anyone’s memories of it, but coming to it for the first time now, I just don’t feel it does enough to stand out from the other similar shows of its time.

Konosuba 3: Army of Darkness ep11 [end] Despite my early misgivings, this season definitely pulled its socks up towards the end, I really enjoyed that last arc. Bubblegum Crisis 2040 ep7 It’s been pretty obvious for a while that Konaka would rather be writing something like the old AD Police...

The live-action film with Mark Dacascos is surprisingly decent if you can find it - it tones down a few things, but it’s pretty faithful to the original story too. Strong recommend for the Golgo 13 movies as well by the way, I think you’d enjoy them.

Delicious in Dungeon ep24 [end] No fancy fight scene to close out the season, but that felt like the perfect place to stop. It’s taken me a long time to get used to the show’s unexpected excursions into body horror, but it’s been a very enjoyable run overall and I’ll miss not having this as a...

Konosuba 3: Dream Warriors ep8 I think this was the best of this run so far - it would hardly change your mind if you don’t already like the series, but it crams in everything that I think is good about it, and it just works. Bubblegum Crisis 2040 ep5-6 There’s some aggressively 1998...

Delicious in Dungeon ep22 Kaiju No.8 ep8 Bubblegum Crisis 2040 ep2-4 After a very flat first couple of episodes, this does feel like it’s staggering into life. One of my main complaints initially was that the show had little sense of its own identity, but the boomers’ transformation upon...

Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night ep1 Didn’t really know what to expect from this - it feels like a more substantial version of K-On. It seems well made, but probably not for me, to be honest. Lupin III : Part 2 ep57-59 Zenigata begging Lupin to help him steal back one of his own family...

It’s been a few years since I last saw it, but based on that first season, I would definitely question how much Bakemonogatari works as satire - frequently when it does things that do feel like they might be a critique of anime tropes, it feels like it gets there by also just doing the thing it...

A new Ghost in the Shell TV series has been announced for 2026, with Science Saru as the lead studio. The exclusive use of art from Shirow‘s original manga suggests it may be intended to be a more faithful adaptation of it, but no other details have yet been forthcoming.

The Fable ep7 Delicious in Dungeon ep20 Kaiju No. 8 ep6 Konosuba 3 ep6 Not the biggest fan of that arc on the whole, but it was good enough. In this time when such folk are under intense scrutiny though, I think all credit is due to the people working on the translation for Konosuba. The...

    AI: How do you feel?

Yeah, I’ve had those in my feed as well. Maybe I’m just trying to convince myself, but I think this feels more like a sideways development based on existing technology than any real advancement in what AI claims to do. Much of the ‘movement’ appears to be simple parallax scrolling of elements...
