Blue Eye Samurai ep 1! Wow, that was a pretty great first episode, really great in fact. When I saw the trailer a few weeks ago I was kind of sceptical, but this is shaping up to be a proper good samurai yarn. Could be the anime of 2023. Don't let the CG and American voices put you off!!

@Spark_Heal Definitely agree with most of what you wrote there. Aside from the more quiet segment that takes place in the town of survivors in the first half, and some nice touches to the ending, the final Rebuild film was incredibly disappointing for me in its descent into unintelligible...

    General TV Discussion

Ha funny that the last post here was about Twin Peaks as I came here to write that I've just finished watching the whole thing back to back (series 1 and 2, FWWM, Missing Pieces, and just finished series 3). Just phenomenal. Here's some random musings of mine (perhaps don't read if you haven't...

Eva Rebuild films: I'll probably have to spend some more time pondering how I actually feel about these, as I've just come off a binge bender of them. As you can imagine, sensory overload is an understatement. My initial feelings after 3+1 are pretty mixed. There's stuff I really liked in...

Eva Rebulid 1: OK, this is fairly safe so far. Feels pretty much just like a recap of the first half of the series but with flashier visuals. Enjoyable enough but uncontroversial. Well apart from the pervy camera angels which weird me out when they're letching over 14 year olds... Eva Rebuild...

I've watched the 22nd ep of Utena now. I think it's genuinely the weirdest anime I've ever seen. The person who green lit this must have been a mentalist, but thankfully so! It's surprisingly dark too, like I'm finding it a genuinely unsettling watch, far more so than even something like Eva.

Revolutionary Girl Utena eps 1-8 What a strange and fascinating show this is! I'm very much enjoying the experience so far! I'll save my thoughts for until I've watched more, but let me just say right now that ED is one of the all time best ever! The song might be favourite EVER anime closing...

    What Games Are You Playing?

Thanks for the replies! I have to say, it sounds pretty good, worth being excited about at least! Just based on the couple of trailers I've seen I would echo Rui's sentiment about the bland looking characters (not you, Torgal!). I'm actually someone who really liked FF15 but the characters...

    What Games Are You Playing?

What do those that have played it make of the FF16 demo? I can't play it alas, as I don't have a PS5 but I'm intrigued as FF has always been one of my personal favourite game franchises. I read that the dev team were told to watch the Game of Thrones box set during development to really hammer...

At what point did otaku culture get so big in the UK?

Wow that's a brilliant post, Rui! Definitely sums up some of what I was sort of feeling but not able to articulate. Man it also made me feel nostalgic, especially for that 90s boom I was just about old enough to feel at least the tail end of and be impacted by as a child who'd visit a lot of...

At what point did otaku culture get so big in the UK?

Wow that's nice to hear Forbidden Planet and others have upped their manga and anime stock. I recently went into Foyles but it seemed like they'd cut down on their manga stock considerably if anything. I haven't been to FP in yonks, although to give them credit they've been pushing a...

Monster (might be a bit of a SPOILERY review, and obviously Monster isn't something you want SPOILERED even a little bit) Set in a relatively realistic depiction of 90s Germany and all tangled up in scraps of cold war history (though I can't comment on the veracity of these aspects). Monster is...

Monster 1-30 Really enjoying this quite a bit, my first time watching Monster. It's a little more comic-booky than the Satoshi Kon-esque psychological horror I always imagined it being for some reason ( it is based on a comic after all!), but there's a lot of depth to all the characters who...

The Gaming News Thread (for news that doesn't need a thread)

FF15 doesn't seem to get an awful lot of love, but I can't lie I do kind of love it. It's still probably my least favourite FF game if I was forced to pick one, but I appreciate them all in different ways and I appreciate 15 for the wacky fun relaxing thing it is. There's no really great tension...

this is going to be a pretty spoilery review, so probably best not to read at all if you haven't seen this and have any intention of doing so! Edge of Darkness (1985) This is a complex thriller murky with cold war-era political and especially nuclear paranoia, and probably one of the best...

Favourite Anime and Manga Based on Video Games

I don't think I've seen a game to anime adaptation I've actually liked much apart from SFII which I watched a ridiculous number of times as a kid, it really captured the feel of the game and had great quality animation from what I remember. Well, I also really enjoyed Tekken too but it didn't...

Trigun: Stampede ep 1 Well what a roller coaster the last few days have been, out of the blue I discover there's a new Trigun series, what a surprise, and check my username I'm a BIG Trigun fan. To this day two of my biggest role models are Vash The Stampede and Milly Thompson. I'm not sure if...

    General Politics Thread

I mean, I agree with much of this, but Harry just clearly doesn't have that level of brutal self awareness, unsurprisingly for someone brought up as a prince and who still claims to believe in the monarchy. But to me, it does seem like what Harry is really trying to fight is the nastier elements...
