Seems to be using the Funimation BD. The wrong gamma on the Funimation BD worsened the banding that already existed in the Kazé and Japanese BDs (see comparison #3) https://slow.pics/c/ghlTKJtx English dub is in 5.1 on Funi BD just like the Geneon DVD.

Wrong gamma in many episodes, and banding and other artifacts, but it's still better than the noise reduced to hell and poorly encoded Funimation BD. Episode 2 English dub track is of lower quality than the Funimation BD. The Dybex and Dynit BDs are the ones to own for best picture quality.

I dunno if this applies to the UK release, but my French Beez BD of Sword of the Stranger has died. The FR BD was replicated by MPO, so it's probably one of those French discs that was manufactured with bad resin. Mastering SID Code: IFPI LZ21 Mould SID Code: IFPI 128A

That's the US import. Zavvi sells US imports sometimes, mostly Criterion Collection and UHDs.

The Limited Edition appears to be using the AoA disc with audio commentary and extras. I'll probably get the Limited Edition.

Robotech - Part 1: The Macross Saga Review

Funi's Robotech remaster does not seem to have fake grain (Bebop's fake grain plate has a digital aesthetic). HG has multi-gen 16mm copies, which due to generation loss are much grainier than what the Japanese possess.

All releases, including the Japanese BD, suffer from a lot of banding, but it's the Funimation BD that suffers the most from it (and Funi BD is also encoded with wrong gamma). In that regard the Kazé BD fares better, but Kazé BD is missing the 5.1 mix of the dub.

Black Lagoon is on 5 discs, so it doesn't use the Funimation discs. You got my attention.

Without spoiling anything, there's one particular scene that would be ruined if Keke's Chinese dialogue was subtitled.

I can sympathize with that. Here are some examples of translation problems that I remember: Literal translation of French expression "vider son sac" (literally "to empty your bag". English equivalent: to get (something) off one's chest). In English subs translated as "Can you give me the...

iirc you're Dutch. The Dybex Blu-ray with Dutch subtitles has proper chapter stops and much better picture quality. Translation for first 8 episodes is not good, but later episodes were handled by a better translator.

The series was popular in Italy unlike in the US (due in part to the inaccessibility), so it's kind of a given that the lavish treatment is reserved to territories where there's nostalgia for the series.
