I really don't like it when they have to break the 4th wall to make a story work, or where the main protagonist is unbelievable with their back ground, without which the story just can't work. Several popular big releases that I can't stand due to this are Death Note and Code Geass.

Planetes was very well done. Part of the reason was the manga and anime, beyond the first part, were done from the view point of different characters (the manga was from the view of Hoshino and the Anime, Tanabe)

I remember before Manga (the label) started over here, when the only anime was Bubble Gum Crisis at around £30 for a 2 episode tape, and about the only way to get anime over here was through the few anime clubs which traded videos - seem to remember Sheffield was the centre in this country.
