Dusk Beyond the End of the World episode 5 Springs and sprung.

Solo Camping for Two! episode 17 Lightweight advice.

Super GALS! episodes 30-35

I'm revisiting both seasons of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid since I watched the movie a few weeks ago at the theater. I'd only watched them subbed before and this time dubbed and I was surprised at how well done the dub was not to mention that the characters are a total hoot.

It's been a week of watching mecha anime from some of my favourite directors...

Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure - Episodes 9 - 13 [Final] + Special

Pleasingly, Dual! has stood the test of time well and I have had a good time watching it again, some of the Evangelion references in the final episodes are very on the nose but this is another good mecha anime from Katsuhito Akiyama, (he even gets some references to Gall Force in there). The Special is kinda pointless and doesn't add anything to the main series which wrapped up the story pretty well. To be honest there is very little Akiyama has directed that I haven't enjoyed.

Battle of the Great Demon Beasts: Demon of Steel

I've seen Demon of Steel loads of times and it's still a perfectly complete, self contained OVA with a great story and mecha designs and looks great too, man, I really want a HD version of this!!! In a discography of great work (I'll overlook Apocalypse Zero for now 😂 ), I think Demon of Steel is possibly Toshihiro Hirano's finest.

FLAG - Episodes 1 & 2

I first watched this back in 2010 and loved it, especially the unique way Ryousuke Takahasi uses the camera viewpoint to tell the story (expanding on an idea he used for the Dougram compilation film) to create a very 'in the moment' feel to the series.

Takahashi gave a lot of his shows a political, world events slant and FLAG was based on a lot of what was happening in the world at the time and was an intriguing view point of those events. It's interesting watching it again now, the camera view allows for a lot of shortcuts in the animation, which makes it feel a bit basic and it was a time when ugly CG mecha was common and the mecha animation in FLAG is no exception but given what has happened in the world since I last watched it, I am finding it a truly engaging and thought provoking show so far this time round.

Ranma 1/2 (2024) - Episode 16

Even though this is doing nothing new, it's easy watching and I'm still enjoying it.

Lupin III: Immortal Bloodline

Having successfully fought off the powerful assassins sent after each of them, Lupin and his gang receive a mysterious invitation to an uncharted island in the Bermuda Triangle, leading them into a final showdown with the sinister mastermind manipulating world events, in the finale of Takeshi Koike’s long running film sequence.

Reaching the end of the series actually made me feel a little emotional, but I’m glad they went out on a high. I wouldn’t recommend going into it without having seen the previous instalments (it does feel very much like the final episode of an ongoing series) but once it gets going, it just keeps ramping up the spectacle further and further. Of all the Koike Lupin films, this is definitely the one that most made me say “yeah, this is the guy who made Redline”.

Sanda episode 5 Facing the wind.

TOUGEN ANKI episode 16 Still breathing.

Super GALS! episodes 36-52 (Complete. This was recommended as a series similar to likes of Kodocha and Neighbourhood Stories which I enjoyed and yeah I’d say it fits in with those in terms of my personal enjoyment.) 3.5/5

Wow, I don't hear people mention watching Flag very often, so I had to smile when I saw this. This is one of my favorite mecha series of the few I actually like. I love that whole photographer/camera angle used in the series and all the political conflict - and then there's that ending... 😭

How did you watch this - Is this actually available to stream somewhere, or do you own it on DVD? I have the Bandai Visual Collector's Edition DVD box set that looks like a well-used box camera, and I also have a bootleg copy of the Flag: Fly High OVA. I need to watch this series again sometime soon.
