Underrated/unknown anime movies to watch?

VANNET

Hikikomori
Like the title say, I don't mind the genres. I just want to watch it for my eating time, a standalone movies.

Some movies I want to exclude,

From Makoto Shinkai and Ghibli Studio, They are too popular, that I'll know them anyway later.

Already on my watchlist, Perfect Blue, Josee and the Tiger, A girl who leapt through time, and Words bubble up-.

I've watched, Drifting Home, Maquia, and Hotarubi no Mori e.

I love Weathering with you and Hotarubi no Mori e.

Oeh, I love hidden gems^^. I would add Arion (greek myth epic), Junkers come here (gentle slice of life drama), The Sea Prince and the Fire Child (fairytale), In this corner of the world (historic drama/ slice of life), they were eleven (sci-fi whodunnit) and Okko's Inn (slice of life comedy) to the list.

Also Night on the galactic railroad, an old classic of which I think might not be as well known today. You have to be in the mood for a slow and meditative watch, but it inspired a lot of famous anime makers, so I think its an important movie.

I Want Let You To Know That I Love You, Wannabes, Rainbow Fireflies, Magical Sisters Yoyo & Nene, Your Voice-KIMIKOE, Grey-Digital Target, Blue Thermal, Napping Princess-that should be enough to get you started.

Fairy tale adventure - Brave Story
Schlocky b-movie horror - Gyo Tokyo Fish Attack
The second best Highlander Movie (very low bar) - Highlander the Search for Vengeance
I'll aways recommend Jin-roh the Wolf Brigade
The Wings of Honneamise
is my fave anime movie of all time.
I don't care if it's part of a franchise, I'll always have time for K-On the Movie
Rintaro's Metropolis is really surprisingly good.
Millennium Actress, my face Satoshi Kon movie... closely followed by Tokyo Godfathers, Perfect Blue, and Paprika.
I really enjoy Mirai
Patema Inverted
has a cool concept
Redline is still the ultimate in style over substance
Steamboy doesn't get enough love, probably because it's obviously aimed at a global market
Time of Eve is amazing
Welcome to the Space Show is another charming family adventure
I know it's Ghibli, but I sense that When Marnie Was There kind of slips under the radar for many.

Not very unknown but I always felt the original Vampire Hunter D movie was underrated in favour of Bloodlust which gets more fanfare. I've always preferred the original and find Bloodlust a bit overrated. Speaking of vampires I've also always felt the original Blood The last Vampire was brilliant and is quite underrated. I get that it's very slight, but (at least from my memory) it's a blast and has great atmosphere and animation. I've also just now discovered the director of Blood also directed another underrated film, Roujin Z. It's been yonks since I've seen it, but I remember it been good fun and looking great. X the movie too, I believe fans of the manga dislike it, and I'm sure they have good reason, I mean I probably wouldn't recommend it for it's plot or characters but simply for it's really unusual confounding atmosphere, again it's been decades since I've watched it so this is just from memory.

OMG yes the first VHD is so so good (also I know you're not a dub fan but the older Streamline dub for it is glorious, just the right balance between campy and sincere), I love Roujin Z as well that's got an awesome English dub too and it's such a clever, funny piece of social satire that has genuine heart as well in it's pushback against the dehumanisation of the elderly and disabled people :)

Paprika is a brilliant movie, was one one of the main inspirations to Inception
Sky Blue: Wonderful Days is a South Korean film released in 2003 which is still one my faves to this day.
I have the oop bluray of Sky Blue that I got about 12 years ago and even then it was very difficult to find. Well worth it, though. I think it was released by some outfit called Tartan video.
