I'm a little concerned about their decision to update the setting to the present day, as opposed to making it a full-on period piece, but I'm keen for this nonethelss.

Having gone through the original one first, I don't know that I'd say I prefer it over Brotherhood, more that I just felt like I'd had enough of the franchise by that point. What I've seen of Brotherhood seemed fine, but I didn't have any great desire to watch it.
Kondo also has a co-director credit on an impressive, but curiously rejected pilot film for the US-helmed Little Nemo movie - it can be found online fairly easily. His tragic passing at such a young age is a huge loss to the industry though. Aside from showing enormous promise as a director...
