UK Anime Distributor Crunchyroll/Funimation/Manga UK Discussion Thread

So what was the point of taking over Rightstuf. I though the whole idea was they wanted the biggest chunk of the market

Instead they killed off the well known brand after saying they wouldnt....

And now (pretty much) killing off their own store....

I would almost bet this time next year CR will say theyre closing the store completely due to "lack of demand" or whatever

I know the gaming/playstation side is a different compay. But it does seem like Sony are going out to kill off physical media

---

Edit - Wasnt this whole CR x Funimation thing down to CR wanting an easier way to get physical disks in peoples houses rather than having to work with other companies?

Seems like theyre doing the complete opposite over the last 5 years
My theory is that sony came to Kleckner and he was starting to have doubts about the viability of Rightstuf and sony told him you can let us buy you out and you can retire or we'll run you out of business. So guess what choice Kleckner made? Basically he tucked his tail between his legs and ran away like the scared mangy cur he is leaving all the faithful RS customers holding the bag.

I'm not sure when it was uploaded but Sound! Euphonium: Ensemble Contest is available to stream on Crunchyroll now.

Outside of a limited U.S. theatrical release this is the first time it's legally available to watch in English (Japanese with English subtitles to be specific, there is no English dub).

This takes place prior to S3 which originally aired with this missing so I'm glad to see all the series is available to watch now.

The movie, Our Promise: A Brand New Day is only available via blu-ray though which may or may not be OOP, I'm not so sure on that one.

Sailor Moon Steelbooks Delayed.

  • Sailor Moon R: Season 2 – 30th November 2026
  • Sailor Moon S: Season 3 – 28th December 2026
  • Sailor Moon SuperS: Season 4 – 25th January 2027
  • Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars – Season 5 – 22nd February 2027

Looking at their store and whats for sale almost feels like they looked at Zavvi and thought "You know what, lets copy that"

Again, to my point of why... All they've done is change a once great rightsuf into one of those stores where you think you could get everything and more from literally any other site so why use it lol

Who wants a Frieren branded vintage Leeds United jersey, yours for €71 plus shipping.
The new stuff on there is obscenely priced.

Oh no, they went full hipster. £44 Chainsaw Man t-shirts? £70 shorts? Who is this rubbish for?

Jeez... like say what you will about Shein and Temu (haven't shopped on either for a while now for ethical reasons so not disputing there are valid criticisms to be made)... at least they have some rly nice all over print t-shirts at much cheaper price points and not so much "it's got a logo on a plain boring background, now shut up and let us take all your money" 😅

Looks like CR is trying to make sure no one will be able to buy physical releases of anime and trying to force people to stream anime on their streaming service. Are they self-sabotaging or just dumb? Or do they just love to piss people off?

I imagine they paid a significant amount to buy Rightstuf too, and to what end, killing the successful business as it existed in less than three years?

I only buy anime from Crunchyroll, no manga or merch, and they are down to 374 titles now. Rightstuf generally had 2000+ titles in their listings. My annual Ultimate Fan subscription runs out at the beginning of January, so if the store continues to drop their physical releases, I'll probably drop my sub to the regular fan tier for streaming access only. At least I'll be able to participate in any Holiday sales they may have this year before my subscription is done.

I'm just glad I decided to use my 20% off voucher I got after a complaint.
Annoyingly the title I ordered soon came down to the same price in the regular sales through HMV etc.
So I didn't really gain.
Not even going to try to work out their motive.

Heck, I may not even buy any more anime at CR before my subscription runs out - not only did I lose my 15% discount on everything, but there is no free shipping any longer, so basically that will add $15-$20 more to each title I would order. It would probably be cheaper for me to import Blu-rays from the UK!

EDIT: I'm going to have to bite my tongue on this thought, as I just now saw Crunchyroll is releasing 5 anime steelbooks in November. Grr! 😮‍💨

New-age anime fans, of course. We on this forum are not the target audience for any of this, as we're far too old to buy cartoon tees~
Bit of a pity (for the younglings) that the clothes look like low effort 'print your own' knock-offs, mind you. My personal fav (outside of Snippy's Frieren Leeds FC one) is the 'easy revenge' Chainsaw Man range: a plain black shirt, with only that text on. Small text taking up a fraction of space, no less. There's even a matching handbag/cap for max value!

'Tis the final stage of normiesation: buy clothes instead of collectibles/discs. Once anime conventions became infested with sex workers, and what was a niche hobby became mainstream/streamable next to (and sometimes on) Netflix, 'twas the beginning of the end. Ease of access and casuals that are secretly disgusted by the hobbies they infest erodes all, 'till we seemingly reach this point. Like in the gaming industry where the fun police/aka politics slowly erodes sexy-cool for social messaging in wannabe movies, there comes a point when the disconnect between those creating/selling and those that once supported them is reached. CR are gambling that now is the time to do away with the old fans. Presumably based on subscription/selling data.

That said, given anime has never made the sort of money gaming has, and collectors were the only one buying to begin with really, I do think CR are making an idiotic choice; jumping the gun and promoting MediaOCD, if anything. Sony will get away with digi-only gaming given how normalised buying DLC/skins has been for a decade+. But with anime, CR only make money if people keep streaming. Turning their store into a subscriber-only overpriced clothes shop as an incentive to continue subscribing is... certainly a choice. Those that remember the olde ways will be off to Nyaa. Those that still actually watch anime, that is.

I can excuse sex workers but I draw the line at casual fans who claim to love anime but mostly are just there to make it more normal! Even as someone who's all lefty and social justice-y and stuff I still don't have much in common with people who are upset by My Dress-Up Darling Season 1 (not seen S2 yet), in all honesty :<

I don't mind social messaging in media to an extent but also think at least have some real writing chops to pull that **** off if you're gonna do it so it's done well.

And yes that T-shirt is massively underwhelming, like... I have done better fanart... and better original art... and designed hoodies that look better... than that T-shirt 😅

Dress-Up Darling's complaints iirc were the result of 🐦/🦋 peoples loathing the idea of an attractive female cosplaying, amirita? Activism groups like Sweet Baby and their ilk are utterly toxic. Fan-service to the newer breed of 'anime fans' - specifically influencers on podcasts etc - is a relic of the past that needs correcting. But yes, Darling has some fan service/male gaze. It's also a series about cosplaying both genders can enjoy, as u found. Not seen S2 either--think they toned it down somewhat?
I stay away from social media; mainly as I am not social, 'innit. 'Tis saddening... butt even I heard tell of some of the nonsense 'neu fans' have had spill out, such as when they discovered Berserk exists and highlighted their disgust at its sexism. Or more recently with Frieren, where her willingless to kill demons instead of humanising them is wrong, because diversity is our strength. Despite an example of inviting one with upon arms going tits up. 'Tis silly.

Social messaging I was mostly referring to modern gaming, allah Sony's strict policy on replacing all male leads with lesbian women, and making said women be as masculine/unattractive as possible, which is also a thing on Netflix/TV/movies and rarely as you say done well, or put in naturally vs a checklist. In anime it's not yet got to that point. In some media tho it's got to point where would rather not engage with, lest be lectured. I pay monies to be entertained, not 'educated'. My politics are less anything against the left than 'let me enjoy what I enjoy, or sod off'. I think?...

PS: I concur your oddly cat-eyed Shinji would've made a better... tee. 🐱 'Tis a nice drawing; one you should send to the Nier director that is doing the remake.
I guess it's better than wearing this, though. Less is more vs one derpy manga panel, maybe?... I must go, for my lasagna awaits. Farewell.

Sex workers infest Anime conventions?
Come on, is this really a thing?

Asking for a friend🥴

Truly, you move meeee by being so... innocent whilst wearing the mask of Golgo 13, and praising MANn. That you spend your time typing about squeezing joy out of perverted and/or isekai anime... despite typing so few words that you could very well be role-playing as Golgo himself! 'Tis this - for want of better phrasing - 'gap moe' that makes you such an enigma to me, Oto-chan. That and our shared affinity for Ayase typing too much/not shutting up that makes us kindred spirits. Almost. Alas, I cannot trust your opinion on comedy, as a man that doesn't laugh: Suba dropped, with nary a mention of Prison School--for shame.

...Given you may genuinely be unaware, allow meee to explain it to you like this: imagine (if you are not, that is) yourself as a woman. One with sexy appeal (protip: you are meant to stroke instead of squeeze, regardless of gender: it ain't ketchup.) Naturally, you do what most such womens do nowadays, and make an OnlyFans account. But no one cares as there are millions of such womens. How should one gain more attention, and more monies, you ask yourself? The answer: go to where men go en masse; wearing as little as possible. BUT WAIT: you'd get arrested and/or sexually assaulted doing so!... that is, unless you go to a fan convention to cosplay as anime/game characters. What's more, you could make Yoko from TTGL no longer be 14yo/legal~ Now do you understand, Oto?

No, you can not actually pay for sex.
