just wanted to say hi, hook up nd chat with likeminded people and get the lowdown on anime events/meetups/screenings around the UK

fave series so far:
Gurren Lagaan
Neon genesis
DArker than Black
Ghost in Shell
Cromartie High
Cowboy Bebop

salutations!
O :D

thanks all- so this is how forums work, eh?

im working my way through the tonnes of anime on my hard drive- Fist of the North Star today- anyone into that show? It seems kind of old skool

i work for Titan Books- we sadly used to re publish more manga in the past than now, its proven a tough sell in the UK

we still have the rights to Ghost in the Shell and AKira (huge seller even today) and we tried Oh My Goddess and Eden (which i love even though its tough going) but for now our range is limited

rumours are though that we might be taking on the republishing for the UK of other US manga publishers, but nothing is confirmed yet

www.titanbooks.com

is there going to be a big anime presence at MCm london expo- i live in greenwich on the DLR line so i might go down- can you get tickets on the door?

Also - how do i create a profile pic for myself that shows up in the forum!!?? I am avatar-less

O

Fist of the North star has a great following around here. I've just watched the "New" Fist of the North star, which is a series of OVAs. Great stuff. And yes, it's old school, but there's nothing wrong with old school. There are many great anime series of old times.

Mmm and would you mind if I asked you what you think is the causes for manga been a weak seller?

Solid titles there. Eden is an amazing series and Oh my goddess is responsible for getting me into manga, along with Gunsmith cats. Once again, sorry to hear they are not so solid on their sales. can I ask you what volume is considered a solid sales figure for a manga book?

Hey! Not everything is gloom and doom then. It would be grat if you could send us a press release once that is confirmed.

Anime kinda overtook the Expo recently. There are more anime fans there than anything else lately =)

Greetings to Captowen! Always useful to have a publisher around these parts. If you live so close to the ExCel, I'd wholeheartedly recommend you give the Expo a try. Current ticket prices are £10 on the door, but queueing is required.

On a separate note, good to see JamesX here again.

cool, thnks for the welcomes

regarding manga sales in the UK being not so hot, obv i cant speak for other publishers or for the popularity of manga as a whole- theres a recession on so obv that has had an impact, and uk sales whether high or low cant be a barometer for the rest of the globe- US and Japan sales of manga will always be higher as the markets there are more comic friendly

it largely i think comes down to outlets- UK is not comic shop heavy, the internet- scanned mnga is obv taking away sales from tankobons, and the fact that manga is a long investment with multiple volumes in the UK which doesnt make it an easy sell
throw in also stereotyped views of manga as 'porn' and there you go
BUT on the flipside sales of GITS and akira continue to be high so there are still fans buying the 'entry' level stuff and maybe going on from there
and interestingly in the manga section of Forbidden Planet (where i get hefty discount as we own that chain)'- the biggest shoppers there are kids.
I'll be sure to post about any new range in our manga developments but everything is hush hush and unconfirmed for now

Did anyone see The Girl who Leapt Through Time this year - ?its one of the bet anime full length features Ive seen in a while and re ignited my interest in anime after some time away

Welcome to the Forums Captowen! Sounds like you'll be a part of the increasingly ageing furntiure that we have here at AUKN's in no time. Loving the list you've added of anime you've liked thus far. If your only just watching Fist of the North Star now, then I can assume you have a hella lot of anime treats to come your way. *jealous*

And... bought The Girl Who Lept threw Time on DVD a few weeks back. Awesome film. :thumb:

Interesting info Captowen. Thanks. Your company owns FP? hefty discounts? expect cheeky emails from me ;)

I've seen it on the big screen last year, when the barbican was showing it here in London.

I've bought the DVD's and re-watched it twice already. It's a really great movie animated or otherwise.

cool

I'm also just finishin off Gantz- but im not really into it as such, just finishing it off as i tend to finish a series i start even if it bores me, im kind of a completist

has ayone heard of the Anime league Uk con event going on in the SLug and Lettuce near Tower Hill in London on Nov 16

Id never heard of this organisation until i stumbled over it on Fbook

anyone going?
Hey Isnt that where the UK anime club (now disbanded) used to meet?

O

AnimeLeague are another anime forum, but they have a bit of an identity problem. They do organise some small events in the UK, but the forums themselves do not properly cater to the UK community, instead mashing everyone in to a big global mess, & with lots of irrelevant 'clans' dividing the community there up unnecessarily.

The event will probably be fun though. The guy who does all the work, Mike Towers, is a nice guy & can organise these things well.
