I've been trying to watch more anime recently, so I've been trying a couple things on netflix.

Violet Evergarden eps1-2

I like the set up about being a letter writer and trying to learn what love is through that, and I want to find out more about mysterious Violet. Why do the writers have to be so annoyingly called "auto memory dolls" though?
That was explained in the exposition about the inventor of the typewriter with Erica looking through the bookstore front window at the end of (I believe) episode 2, as the ED music was playing. Although, a few of the fansubs I've seen translated that phrase to "Auto Memoir Doll," which to me makes much more sense in describing a typewriter than "Auto Memory Doll."

Re:Zero S2 Ep.16-I keep coming back to this show-Sabaru is a classic study in angst, Emilia is sweet but flawed. The show has a split personality, at times times it can be very pleasant but then it turns into a gorefest.

Rin's Daffy Duck-style reaction face seems a bit out of left-field, but sure, why not. This also made eel look appetising...

Akudama Drive ep2

The direction felt rather noticeably pedestrian in this episode, which is a shame, the visuals are rather impressive otherwise.

Grey: Digital Target (1987)

Finally got around to this one, after hearing some of the soundtrack put me in the mood for it. There's nothing in Grey that I don't think I've seen in other post-apocalyptic sci-fi anime, but rarely have I seen so many genre tropes comprehensively crammed into the one film before, and that's kind of endearing. I'm curious to know how it compares with the manga though; the anime tends to feel like a series of often exposition heavy vignettes, rather than a continuous story, and I'm not sure if that's something that comes of it being an adaptation, or if the source material was just like that anyway.

Code Geass Movie Trilogy

These movies were really exhausting endeavours to watch. Being recaps/retellings/newtimeliney things there’s just so much going on in each one and they’re all over 2 hours long. The second movie, Transgression, felt the least exhausting since they decided to axe a good chunk of the season 2 content it would’ve covered and instead montaged a bunch of stuff, which is partly a sub story that leads to a certain death in the TV series but the movies keep them alive, probably the biggest change of the whole thing tbh. Glorification, the final movie, was the most movie feeling one of the lot, it had the least ground to cover and could pretty much just go full in on what was left. Now I can finally watch Re;surrection.

Millennium Actress (Japanese audio) - Film

A Satoshi Kon film that I had never seen prior, and now I have thanks to the 4K Ultra HD disc. The best way to describe it, is a mix between Memories of Matsuko combined with Satoshi Kon and Susumu Hirasawa's style. It's a great but sad film overall and honestly it's worth a watch as you would expect. The only issue I had was that the blend between dream and reality did get a bit too loose to the point where it was confusing me a bit, but in general I understood the whole storyline.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion I: Initiation (Japanese audio) - Film

With Re;Surrection on its way, I finally started the compilation trilogy which diverges the TV series into a different direction. This first film was actually pretty decent and while it cuts out a lot of stuff, it does introduce new scenes throughout which are noticeable by the animation quality. The film compiles episodes 1-17 of the Lelouch of the Rebellion series into 2 hours 15 mins runtime.

Vampire Knight Guilty

Latest title from my oldest backpile, interesting story with a few plot-twists (for it must be years since I read the manga[if I did read it as my memory is a bit faded]), ending was decent enough, leaving the door open if they ever decided to make another series [as the manga was ongoing when the anime was made]

Change of pace next with a few movies.

Horimiya 1-3 - I've been heavily invested in checking this one out since I found the manga last year(and still can't purchase physically. YEN PRESSSSSS please give me another release...) But they've done a solid job so far. I think the anime take on this has done it some justice in parts as the manga can be up and down in pacing early on, but it's captured the main parts well and not to quick or slow. However it has missed out a lot of other developments which I am sad to see not being explored. I think if this was done as a 2-cour series rather than 1, it would be a lot better. But there we go

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection

I actually watched this yesterday but was uncertain how I felt about it and I still kind of am. Overall, I don't feel like it adds anything and while it's a sequel to the alternate timeline the movies setup it all feels like a massive "what if?" and rather inconsiquential. It'll be interesting to see if Z of the Recapture makes any attempt to follow on from what happens in this movie or is just a spin-off set after the events. Also, I feel like some very minor script changes could have made this part of the TV series timeline, would that change how satisfied I feel with the movie? Probably not, the TV series had a great ending and to contiue beyond that and even undo it, feels unnecessary. Visually the movie is still as good as the TV series, only now the mechs are CG which I expected but I do miss them being hand drawn.
