FLCL: Progressive ep1
I remember seeing a little of this around the time it popped up on Adult Swim's streaming service and being neither here nor there on it, but I always felt like I didn't give it a fair crack of the whip, so now that it's on CR, what the hell.
Watching it again, the only thing that really sticks out to me about this first episode though is the 'unisex clothing' character. Assuming that one of
FLCL's themes is overcoming conformity, it seems odd that they'd have such an apparently unconventional guy in the classroom and no-one seems all that bothered.
Michiko & Hatchin ep1
Having seen the first episode some years ago, I was deeply put off this one by the extended display of (mercifully non-sexual) child cruelty in this opener. I get that it's important to understand what Hana/Hatchin wants to escape from, but it's a grueling watch and deeply at odds with the jaunty,
Bebop-like tone suggested by the opening sequence and scenes of Michiko's gun-blazing prison escape.
Nevertheless, rewatching
A Woman Called Fujiko Mine has given me a hankering for some more Sayo Yamamoto-helmed action, so I'm keen to see what this show holds once it hits its stride.
