"Weird Japanese Stuff"

That's exactly what a little posh eight year old's mum called the anime section in HMV while I was having a browse. Now I'm used to this. I once heard one lesser educated person call it "chinky ****". But the conversation I overheard between this boy and his mum was amusing.

"Wait mum, I want to see if they have... what was it called... Spirited Away."

I perk up, thinking I might be able to save this family £7 by telling them of it's BBC airing tonight. I might even help spark the boy's interest in anime. The boy continues.

"Mrs Johnstone (can't remember her name) made us watch this last week before Christmas."

Brave teacher, I think. The boy spots it.

"There we go. Spirited Away. Worst. Movie. Ever."

The boy walks away, seeming quite pleased that of what he said, acting strangely victorious, as if he had insulted the plastic DVD case.

I burst into contained laughter.

I have to say, that's the first time I've ever heard someone call a Miyazaki film "the worst ever".
Has anyone else ever seen anything similar happen, in a shop or otherwise?

He has a point though.

I knew you'd say that.

Though, even by your standards, calling it the worst movie ever is a harsh statement. Clearly, he hasn't seen Hercules In New York (although that could also contend for best movie ever as easily as worst).

Anyway, he was about eight. He was just being... an eight year old.

*edit* Please, I don't mean this topic to be a debate about Spirited Away, in case anyone gets any ideas. It's about the... "inexperienced"'s reaction to anime.

If anything that child needs to see Princess Mononoke or even Nausciáá that'll set him straight. Btw Spirited Away is good, just not that good

I think Espy answered his own question, he was being a cocky little eight-year old who knows nothing, never given anime a chance, yet loves DBZ. They're all the same. Oh and I've seen a bunch of moshers look at anime and due to it being next to the porn section dubbed it "Cartoon porn."

Heheh, no. The question was;

I just wanted to share that on the boards, and see if it sparked any interesting discussion.

I have a tale to tell. There was an old guy looking at the porn, I felt rather uneasy being stood next to him looking at the anime and martial arts movies until to my horror he had swooped over next to me holding two porno DVD's and flicking through the anime section. I then jumped back a bit because he kinda just appeared to which he grinned at me, I awkwardly laughed and said "You should check out LA Blue Girl..." to which he thanked me kindly.

I've given you a similar scenario in my post above when I just edited.
EDIT: Yeah, Mustaine that's happened to me a lot, old guys looking in the porn section and you think "Was he just looking @ anime!? No... it couldn't be, there's a porn section right next to it."

Why are the anime sections always next to the porno, or worse, "gay interest"? I always make my browse short because of that.

Your post amused me, Dave.

Recently in Liverpool they moved the anime section next to the Sci-Fi section, since the anime section must've gotten a little big as of recent due to more fans or something?

Probably, Naruto and Miyazaki films are certainly helping increase the audience. The latter convinced me. It's better suited next to sci-fi than porn anyway...

Yeah I've been in HMV and heard people saying stuff like,

"Why do they waste valuable shelf space on crap like that" and "oh look geek porn for people who don't like real people"

They always make me laugh, my mates always take the piss when I buy anime with lines like the above.

Actually, Spirited away is very good. I watched it in Dub yesterday, and I loved it.

I think he is not in touch with his sensitive side. Maybe he is a big fan of WWE..... Maybe

i watch WWE (wouldn't say i'm a fan though) and i quite liked Spirited Away. though i really did think of it as a disney film :(

I've not really had very many of these experiences yet, I simply get the "wierd look" alot of the time when buying or returning unwanted anime.

Makes me really nervous... like I'm holding a porn DVD or something ^^;;

I have the best thing for shopping...
Becoming ignorant to all around me (unless I need to get past them/visa versa).
So I don't get many experiences like that. Though I'm glad that even though I bought Puni Puni Poemy (which if you don't know is 18+), that the staff didn't look at me wierd.
